Pick five cards and marshal a train

Hi All.  I am guilty of being a YouTube fan, and one thing I would like to have a go at is marshalling a train. This idea involves starting with eight cards and rolling stock to match, but I need to make the cards first.
I can take photos of my wagons and vans, but it has been recommended to use Excel? But until I get my Laptop working I haven’t got a printer, unless I purchase a WiFi printer to go with my iPad??? I googled the question and apparently Apple have their own version, well if I can figure that out, I would need a long sleep afterwards.
Back to the game with the stock in position , the player shuffles the cards, picks out five and that is the formation of the train. You probably know the rest, get Shunting.    Any help please???  Best wishes Kevin

You can do it simply as writing numbers on each card and stick a sticker on each wagon with a corresponding number Kevin no excel or printer needed to do that and you will be away.

Normally, one has to assemble a 5 truck train from 8 wagons on the "puzzle".

The random selection of you 5 wagons from the 8 can be achieved in many ways - all cheap.

One method is small coloured balls - from a childs toy set.  You stick a coloured disc on the roof of your vans then draw a coloured ball from a bag.  5 balls drawn, 5 wagon train to make up.

Or, stick a number disc on each of your wagons.  You can buy little wooden bingo callers number discs very cheaply.  Select 5 numbers from the bag.  The order they come out is the order of the wagons in the train.

It's all a bit like drawing the lottery - or the football fixtures ……………………

Hi Petermac.  Thank you your reply. Yes I understand that, but, I am a bit ,no ,a lot clumsy, no more trip hazards required. And anyway I wanted to do something clever. And the shuffling of a cards appealed to me. No cheating involved.  Best wishes Kevin

Hi Kevin

I use a random number generator that chooses x from y, where in this case x=5 and y=8. Takes all about a millisecond. Note them down on paper. http://www.randomlists.com

You need a list of what wagon corresponds to what number. Excel or similar.

No need for a printer. Buy some more wagons instead.

Hi Nigel    Thank you for your reply. More wagons??? But that would require more KD’s and more faffing around.well intentioned opinions I am sure, but now that I am just seriously thinking about scenery, and I fancied a goods shed, until  I saw the price of a ratio kit a (couple of wagons) worth.  Best wishes Kevin

If you really wanted photos you could always print them off at your local Boots the Chemist and some supermarkets do it.  Much cheaper than buying a printer if you only need a small number of photos.

Hi Michael. Thank you for your reply. The issue isn’t taking photos, I am capable of that. The issue is uploading photos of the correct size into the gallery. I have had some success, with assistance from YMRC Members, and I have had to delete some of my failures.   Best wishes Kevin

As you say Kevin, you are perfectly capable of taking and also posting photos, so don't give up, but repeat your successes and learn from the mistakes. It's how we all do it!

At 6'4'', Bill is a tall chap, then again, when horizontal he is rather long and people often used to trip over him! . . . and so a nickname was born :)

Hi Michael.  Thank you. I do beg your pardon, I was thinking that you meant photos of my wiring,  that is a good idea but , as I am a clumsy Modeller, can they be laminated without spoiling the image?  Best wishes Kevin

Definitely Kevin.  We laminate photos all the time at my school and it works perfectly.  I must admit I hadn't thought of laminating cards, but that might just be a very good idea! Thank you!
