Weathering or not

Hi All.  I do have Metcalfe Kits, also a high regard for them, But, they always look too upright and excuse me a bit "Cardboard Like".
My question is, during the building of one of these kits, is there a way to "Weather the kits without making them disintegrate?" For instance you cannot make them wet, and powders "might not stay put", I have read about spraying card kits with a "Clear Matt Varnish" but I think that is just to protect them? from muck fingers.  all the best. Kevin, yes by spraying with a clear matt varnish, let it dry  then weathering powders stick OK. That is what I have done with Metcalfe & Scalescenes/ card buildings
