'Safety' Chimney pots

or.....bend it like Doofer

We've had safety matches and safety razors, now the Doofer Safety chimbley pot.  Not that they were ever likely to harm you, but rather they are very liable to be damaged themselves, usually by 'The Hand of God'!

So, off to the tip we go, looking for some scraps of old fashioned rubber covered three core cables. Strip off the rubber from the cores, keep the brown if you like the colour, as here, or keep the lot if you want to paint them. Appropriate lengths are forced over a short piece of tooth-pick. Glue the toothpick end securely into the top of the chimney, if you do accidentally bump the pot end, it'll just bend slightly and straighten itself out again.  Ta-dahhhhh!

I've tried this out on my harbour office, and it seems to work fine. I'll be the first to admit the 'hole' in the top is a little small but it's a small price to pay for self straightening chimney pots.

I hope this helps someone a bit,

Doug

You could also wrap paper (as you have previously demonstrated) around the cable cover, to give the more fancy pot finishes, without compromising the safety aspect.

How deep do you have to dig for rubber covered cables Doug ?  I thought that stuff went out with lead pipes.  On the other hand, does rubber covered outdoor cable have rubber insulation ?

Many Outdoor flex cables especially ones that may be submerged in water have have a rubber outer insulation and each off the inner cores are rubber covered aswell.

The old rubber insulated house twin and earth which would have been condemmed many years ago had red and Black rubber inner sleeving.

It may be possible to make the whole building of rubber to prevent water damage too.

He has a residents permit Les.  The locals bring him cups of tea whispering mutterings like "Le pauvre anglais" whilst he sits in his fingerless mittens and old hob-nail boots stripping the copper from old cables.  He usually tells them he just wants the insulation for chimneys………..:mutley:mutley
