You've probably seen these before . . .

In the Chinese fashion, starting from right to left, you can see the development of the technology progressing.

The springs can be located either in the square notch or further back.  The problem is that the clamps tend to twist in your fingers as you squeeze them, despite gluing the spring anchors with PVA.

I solved this problem by drilling through the jaws and inserting a nail, which is glued in place with PVA at the head end.  I drilled a 5/64" hole right through and then drilled out the side opposite the nail head to 3/32" so the jaw slides over it easily.

I prefer the model with the spring in the square notch, as it applies a bit more pressure.  However it doesn't open as far as the ones with the spring further back.  These allow the jaws to accommodate bigger pieces of work.

The final job is to file the points of the jaws so they close square against each other.  The jaws can also be filed into special shapes for special jobs.

I have used clothes pegs, but some glues like sticking to wood, so I now use this type, in various sizes, widely available, Amazon, fleabay etc.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Plastic-Spring-Strength-Textured-Handles/dp/B00NVC6R5Q/ref=sr_1_3?s=diy&ie=UTF8&qid=1443877483&sr=1-3

Also these "garden ones", springs are not as strong so better for more "delicate" work

There are quite a few variations on these types, mostly cheap if bought in packs.

I use this type for card buildings, holding parts while glue sets, you can also get plastic ones similar, but I find the glue sometimes sticks to the clips as well, especially if it's plastikard  being joined with  liquid poly or MekPak
