I cut jute string into various lengths - half an inch or so to about 4 1/2 ins. The string is two-ply, and I like to separate it into two, then tease out some of the lengths, leaving others as they were.
I glue them down randomly criss-crossing each other and allow to dry thoroughly
When dry I use a pet grooming brush to tease the fibres upwards
Here they've been snipped back to a more believable length and a few separate tufts have been added. Also some fine sand has been sprinkled and glued, just as ballast is glued - eye dropper and dilute PVA. The sand is helpful for disguising any obvious "cables" running across the ground. Provided the glue has been kept off the tops of the jute pieces, they won't be too prominent after brushing.
The gingery strands were in the jute and I liked them.
I vacuumed up the loose bits.
A battered figure for scale.
They're easy to colour with pastel dust. These are "as is".
