Joint LMS and GWR railway stations

My first question to the group.

Can anyone please tell me if joint LMS and GWR railway stations and / or terminals were common?

I have recently come across an article on a layout called 'Porters Lock' which is a 7mm fictitious model of such a case.

Regards, Bruce F.

Hi Bruce,
Welcome to the group.

Chester and Shrewsbury immediately spring to mind, although they are both large stations.

Afonwen in North Wales. GWR coast line (single track) to Pwhelli, with LMS branch coming in from Bangor.

I cannot offhand think of any small terminus stations.

The Minsterley, Tenbury Wells and Halesowen branches are three off the top of my head. I'll check up when I finish work to see which others there were.

Thanks Alan, I'm sure that those suggestions will throw more light on the subject for me. I'm more interested in a precedence as I am only aiming to model a fictitious terminus. Cheers, Bruce.

Hi Bruce,

Here's another - Wells (Somerset) Priory Road station. S&DJR and GWR. The S&DJR was jointly owned by the MR and LSWR (later LMS and SR) and the station was their branch terminus, whilst GWR trains ran through to join their two branches serving the city together.

Ok, reality says that it would only have been small tank engines up to Prairie, but it could give you GWR, LMS(MR) and SR running together.

Only one missing is MY company, the LNER!

And who wouldn't want to include the glorious Southern Region??

Bruce,

To answer your original question: no, they weren't common (94 out of the 6,500 open after the grouping) but they did exist.

Last night, I was trying to post a full list and was about halfway through when my browser crashed.

:brickwall

Rather than risk that happening again, I'm going to take advantage of the 'edit' function and post in chunks.

A few have already been mentioned, so please forgive any repetitions. As would be expected, the list of locations is mostly to the west of the UK below the Mersey/Humber line, in the counties of Cheshire, Flintshire, Denbighshire, Staffordshire, Merionethshire, Middlesex, Montgomeryshire, Shropshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Buckinghamshire, Carmarthenshire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Berkshire, Wiltshire, Somerset and Surrey.

NOTES:
The primary information from which I am distilling this list gives the names of all pre-grouping companies with use of a station in each town/village/location served by the railway network. I am then timeshifting that to the LMS/GW era. I don't have personal knowledge of which stations were actually joint or shared, but as you (Bruce) are going to check each site I'm sure you'll catch any inconsistencies.
I cannot guarantee that the list is absolutely definitive, exhaustive and accurate. It's a good start, though.
There were many, many shared junctions, which are not included unless there was also a station at that site.
In this list, (P) denotes passenger only and (G) goods only.

Cheers, David.

Hi '6243',
It is very kind of you to go to so much trouble. At least there is some precedence and that is all I need for my imaginative layout  :)

I'll start working my way through the list and check loco allocations at their nearest depots.

Cheers,

BF

Hi Bruce,

It's the sort of exercise in organising trivia that appeals to my brain on a day off. Sorry it's been so long since I had one of those. I'll be adding another batch in the next couple of hours. I'm surprised to say that there were far more than I thought, given the tiny size of the smallest grouped company.

David.

Hi David,

I note you've listed Blaenau Festiniog. However, there were two completely separate terminating stations here, one GWR and one LNWR, only linked in the 1960's where the GWR line was severed by the new Tryweryn Reservoir work.

The station now existing with the Festiniog railway was only opened in the early 1980's.

Thanks for that local knowledge, Alan. I'm sure Bruce will take that into consideration when deciding whether to follow-up on that particular location.

Thanks again for everyone's suggestions. I'm taking it all into consideration and trying to cross-reference them with loco sheds and their allocations.

Sorry for the hiatus at 'Q', Bruce. I've just finished a straight ten days on shift and now get a long weekend. I'll crack on with R to Z later today.
