I have spent a few hours over the past week looking at photo's of Pannier tank engines 'shunting' and have not managed to find out how they had their lamps position, due to the photo's all contradicting each other.

I was going to go 'Light Engine' but have seen them with class J and class K settings.

Any help would be gratefully accepted.

John :)

Oh, Dr Beeching what have you done?
There once were lots of trains to catch, but soon there will be none.
I'll have to buy a bike, 'cos I can't afford a car.
Oh, Dr Beeching what a naughty man you are!

Depends on the period
If permanently shunting in sidings or yard:

Post 1947 BR adopted the LMS system a red lamp on one corner of buffer beam and a white on the other….front and rear.

Pre nationalisation the GWR were different….of course!  Red lamp on top iron front and rear. If coupled to a shunters truck one lamp on loco and one on top of tool box on truck

There is the usual caveat lamps required between dusk and dawn/fog/snow

John
