Just picked up from another site that he has died. A massive influence on the hobby  and one of the inspirations hat led me to hopefully a better standard of modelling.

I've only just now heard this news elsewhere Richard and am very saddened indeed, as Iain has been a huge driving force behind railway modelling.

Sadly I never had the pleasure of meeting him, although I also, have been hugely influenced though his writing and his books in my library remain a constant inspiration and are well read.

At 6'4'', Bill is a tall chap, then again, when horizontal he is rather long and people often used to trip over him! . . . and so a nickname was born :)

It would not be an exaggeration to describe Iain as having been a giant of the hobby.

His loss will be keenly felt by all who have met him or read any of his writings.

A sad, sad loss to the hobby.  One of the modern greats.  It was he that taught us the art of weaving our trackplans around a baseboard when we had been bought up on Cyril Freezer's straight lines and ovals.  Like others, I have a number of his books and continually refer to them for inspiration and tips.

Very sad news indeed.
Iain Rice was a pioneer of fine scale modelling and I, like thousands of others became better modellers by reading his books.
I was fortunate enough to see him a couple of times at exhibitions over the years and admire his layouts.
We all have to go one day. Few will leave a legacy like Iain Rice.
