Railway Paintings

I count myself as being really very fortunate that my wife shares my interest in railways and while I model them Chris paints them. In my opinion (I'm biased I know) she's pretty good, so good that in 2013 she was accepted as an associate member of the Guild of Railway Artists
If there is interest I will share some of her work here.

This was her very first railway painting - entitled "Worked Hard" it's 14" x 10" and is done in Acrylic on canvas.

Your website says it all Rob, where there are some really superb images, although those two spotty lads should also have a tad more clag, being so close to those wonderful machines! I was certainly never so clean as a schoolboy, although I had a bath every week, whether I needed it or not!

''Should We Really Be Here'' has to be my favourite. Thanks for sharing.

Bill

At 6'4'', Bill is a tall chap, then again, when horizontal he is rather long and people often used to trip over him! . . . and so a nickname was born :)

Thanks both,
'Should we really be here' is one of my favourites too Bill.

I will post them all here over the next few days/weeks for those that are not inclined to visit my website. Chris has just finished another which I haven't yet taken any photos of so I will share that too in the New Year. - Those of a GER Persuasion are in for a real treat!

Next up is "Buckeye Coupling" again acrylic on canvas and 24" x 18" in size. This particular painting was exhibited at Railart 2013 held at Locomotion in Shildon County Durham.

Hi Rob,

Chris has caught the massive proportions of those couplers! It's actually a Master Car Builders Automatic Coupler (a Janney knuckle coupler) manufactured by AG Wild & Co. of Sheffield.  "Buckeyes" were manufactured by the Buckeye Automatic Car Coupler Company (also a Janney).

"It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop" - that's the pin dropping into the knuckle on coupling.

Hi Nigel,

Thanks for the input, you learn something new everyday. They always seem to be called buckeye's over here irrespective of who made them.

Hi Rob,

Bit like all vacuum cleaners are "Hoovers". Just don't try and order "Buckeyes" from Kadee.

As attached to the East Coast Joint stock?

Hi Rob,

That drop-down design explains how they could be attached to regular hook and chain stock (I always wondered how the NER/LNER and the GWR managed the Newcastle-Cardiff Ports Express carriage stock). The GWR did the same thing in the 1920's with the South Wales stock, and BR also did this with some Mk-1s.

All I can say to those pictures is WOW!!!!:doublethumb

SWMBO also paints and very well, but inanimate subjects have no chance, it has to have fur and preferably  go woof.

Being in the dog house in our house is a privilege.

Now I've finally started a model railway…I've inherited another…

Thanks Q
By coincidence Chris is painting a dog at the minute as an exercise in how to use water soluble oils before attempting a railway subject in them.
Chris has also started to add more people to her paintings.

This one is entitled "Boy and Their Toys" and is one of the biggest that she has done at 30" x 40" in size

As with the other's that I have shared it is acrylic on canvas.

I don't think ELF and Safety would allow boys that near these days!!!
Another wonderful painting.

SWMBO often uses pastels on velvet paper for particularly furry Animals, although She uses water colour , acrylic and oils as she chooses  for each subject.
Just for a change at the moment she's doing some weaving, currently an Owl on the hand loom and some needle felting, of Rough Collies (of course).

Chris has recently (December) finished a couple more paintings.
The first is a lovely "chocolate box" scene. The compressions required to make it a small image doesn't really do justice to the overall vibrancy of this painting. I am really looking forward to getting it framed and hung.

Thanks John.
I always pass on the kind words that fellow members post and they give Chris quite a boost when I read them out.

The second painting that Chris finished in the twilight of last year is entitled "Spring Clean at Stainmore"

This is another acrylic on canvas and is a similar size being 24" x 36".
Chris has also decided to put this one up for sale. She plans to use a portion of the proceeds to buy shares in the Stainmore Railway Company which will ultimately assist in the preservation of both the locomotives featured.
