Ina Ray Hutton

I can't top Max's hot dog, but one of my other interests is big band sounds and jazz of the 20s, 30s and 40s. It's such a wide subject and one is always finding something new, especially as I am a devotee of  Russel Davies Radio 2 programme at 2100 on Sunday nights 'The Art and Craft of the popular song'.

This week he introduced me to Ina Ray Hutton, singer, lyricist, dancer and band leader of the 1930s. She is reputed to have toured with up to 400 gowns!

I've included a You Tube clip, there are plenty of others, you may agree that whilst there was no wide screen HD televison in the 30s, this lady is entertaining enough at 800x600 in black and white.

[I have an idea her charms may appeal to a wide range of our members…]

Certainly a talented lady Doug. Wonder what happened to her eventually?

Thanks for that, Doug.  I was in love with Betty Hutton as a kid.  It was great to see those old clips again.  :thumbs

Did you know we have a few jazz musicians on the Forum Doug?

I think it's Max who is a Bass player and I play Vibes (started in 1958 as a Lionel Hampton fan - who you will be well familiar with no doubt? - and am now mostly influenced by Milt Jackson, late of the MJQ).   I think there are some pictures of both of us in action somewhere on here.

Hi, Ken,

Yes I remember I've seen those pics, but a long way back! I played a trumpet for a while, in an apprentices' military band, but never had the embouchure for anything special otherwise and just sort of lost it. [the playing thing, not the trumpet…]

Gino Washington and the Ram Jam Band stuff were as far as I got, only three notes to remember….

My heroes are mostly before my time, Duke Ellington, Nat 'King' Cole, Sidney Bechet, Coleman Hawkins, Satchmo, Ella Fitzgerald down through bluesy Muddy Waters, Lightning Hopkins, Mahalia Jackson and Bessie Smith.

Luckily the Radio 2 i-player gives me Claire Teal and Russell Davis on a Sunday night [one after the other……..lousy programming why not spread it out a bit?] and Big Band Special on Mondays evenings, Tuesday at 1900 gives Jamie Cullum with Jazz, but he gets on my nerves, but he had Madeleine Peyroux  live this week, whilst BBC Radio Wales does 'A String of Pearls' on Sundays too, mainly 30s and 40s stuff.

Without the i-player I'd go mad!

Best wishes,

Doug

Edit to say this lady knew how to sing, too!

Just go here  http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/radio   you are correct, it is the TV part that is blocked. If you register, you can add favourites etc. The good thing about it for chums like Les is that it has a 'stand-alone i-player feature which uses very little of your 'pooters download ability.

Enjoy!
