In actual fact, Mike, I think they're pretty good!

It's obvious from the results thus far what you are trying to achieve and I think all it would take is a bit more practice and you could find yourself with some very acceptable figures.

How about making a few more?

Go on, you know you want to.     :D

Actually I think there is potential in what you have done as a starter, the proportions are not too bad.  Don't give up just yet.  I would try the most basic pose first, say a person simply standing upright, move the legs together so they touch and the arms right by the side of the figure - you should get a better feel of the proportions of the shoulders etc.  Keep going!

Mike - the blue fella on the right isn't at all bad !!  Don't write it off yet - there's real promise there  - it's a very difficult thing to model.

As for the one on the left - it will look better after the baby is born !!!

I echo what Perry said - that's a very good start, Mike.  Just keep at it!  If you're using modelling clay then there's no need to let it dry and harden until you are completely happy with the work.  Sorry if I'm stepping into the proverbial sucking of eggs territory - but if you really dampen the clay down and wrap the whole thing in clingfilm it will keep soft for a good long while.  That way you can take your time over the figure.

There's definite potential there. The blue guy's well on the way.

There's a modeller 5min from here who makes his own in OO scale. I've seen them first hand and they're very good.  Making my own is on my long list of things to do.
http://users.bigpond.net.au/robsstuff/   This is the link to his site. I did try to recruit him - he's the one who reprogrammed a DCC fitted diesel for me.
 Keep at it, Mike.

The Blue one looks not at all bad but the other one, has he been in a car smash  :D . Think if you was to tweak the blie guy a bit you could be onto a winner.

Well Mike I think the Victorian lady with the hat and the muff is excellent and I would have her on Barchester any day. The chap on her left still has leg problems, don't we all. I'm sure with just a little more practice you could soon get that right though. Seems to me you could knock out some pretty good stuff.

Missed the start of this (being away) so seeing it all for the first time, I can easily see how much progress has been made.

Freddy Kruger now looks slightly less menacing, the Edwardian Lady has given birth and taken off her flippers and people are beginning to mention details (hat and muffler etc).
Progress indeed :!:
Keep up the good work, you will crack this one :!:  :!:

There! And you thought I was taking the mickey.  :(

I was serious; I honestly thought the modelling of those figures showed potential. I'm glad that other members agree. So now you have no excuse. You are our unofficial 'Chief Figure Sculptor' and we want to watch how things progress from here; as I'm sure they will.  :D

Great effort, honestly a lot of potential here. I reckon the blue guy needs a little more on the hips to sort out that leg problem.
I am NOT going to try this in N scale

Just to prove how seriously we are taking your efforts, Mike, you should ask Bob (or Jeff/Perry) to change the title of this thread.  No one's laughing, and most are impressed - and looking forward to you "working at it."  :D

Hi all Maybe because the techniques are so different to what I am used to it's taking a while to get it right. I still don't know whether the comments are for real or not!
Still I tried painting them both after even more tweaking and I am beginning to think i am getting there. The most difficult part is modelling the man. He either looks like a eunuch or he's hung like a donkey!!
Thankyou
Mike

By the way. Please don't judge the painting, these were by way of an experiment. If they are OK I will be more careful with the acrylics!!
