Populate coaches, busses and other seats on the railway

I'm always on the lookout for seated people to pose in cars, busses, horse drawn wagons, coaches, benches and the like and while ordering some horses and a particularly lovely brass milk float, came across theses:

http://www.dartcastings.co.uk/dart/PP1.php

Dart say they're not up to the standards of the Monty's range, which they're not quite, but for interior placement, they do the job rather well.

The extra weight of the white metal also helps coaching stock, particularly those from plastic or brass kits and at 55p each, I'll be ordering another set.

Hope this helps,

Bill

Kind Regards

Hi Aaron,

Here's a closer photo of the 15 figures (yep, a stowaway snuck in my packet of 14!)

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Bill

Hi Bill,

They have nice detail and not a lot of flashing. If you can get your hands on a suede brush that will give a nice key for the paint.

Yep, I'll stick broomsticks up them and paint then when I get back in a week's time, as am off to the UK tomorrow for a sad farewell to a best friend. I think I'll try the overall dark grey coat first to get in all the nooks and crannies and then dry brush colours ad textures over them.

I have a coupe of suede brushes in my automotive tool chest, so can repurpose one of them.

See you next week.

Hi Bill,

What do they weigh? Presumably they're pewter/white metal. Almost as good as lead.

Nigel

Edit: OK, just checked the website, white metal. Very useful.

Ooh, at that price they might not be too horrible to import to the USA. Does Dart also do train crew?

California? May require that declaration that is contains materials known to cause cancer. They're also a bit big for HO. Shipping is £6.00 international.

I also work in 00. In fact, the reason I was asking if Dart also did train crews is because I've found HO figures quite literally come up short when placed in 00 locomotive cabs.

Hi guys,

Dart do a very large range of useful railway kits, comprising a huge collection of figures (Dart and Monty's), together with horses, wagons (white metal and etched brass), coach sides, detailed components and more besides, just check their website: Dart Castings - PP1

Sorry for so short a reply, but I'm on yet another car ferry in the UK now, going to see my mum on an island off the south coast.

I'll be back in France by Wednesday evening, but have just downloaded last Saturday's jigsaw to give me more to do in the evenings.

See you soon, a bientot,

Bill

Hi Brendan,

It's not just the height, they are anorexic as well (Preiser excepted). Even in HO (most look to be scaled for 1:100). S-scale figures actually look better than HO ones.

There is plenty of choice if you want to pay the postage. IMO even the best diecast ones are pretty basic. Get a Bachmann UK painted locomotive crew set (steam or diesel) and be done with it (e.g., 36-047, £6.21 for 6 from Hattons, or get them from ebay.com). They're in BR blue, easily repainted/weathered to whatever. And adjustable if you take the arms off with a sharp box-cutter and reattach.

I like the idea of white metal figures simply for the weight. Not the detail.

Hi Nigel and Brendan,

You are both quite right regarding size and thickness of HO figures, which, while being so unsuitable for most 4mm railway use, are indeed invaluable for putting inside road vehicles, where most of mine end up. The interior spaces of road transport models is unduly taken up with very thick external shells. Even open cars need feet removing, although horse drawn wagons seem better scaled.

A good case of 'horses for courses'!

Nigel, it wasn't the detail that really got my attention with the Dart figures so much as it was the price.
As far as HO figures go, I don't believe I own any Preiser, but I have found Atlas figures and other older makes to also be of true 1:87 HO size, but it doesn't stop them from needing the height boost of their fat bases to see out the cab windows of 00 steamers.

Hi Bill,

Yes, HO figures fit better in passenger cars, where an  advantageous seat booster (piece of styrene) is all that is required.  Even then legs or feet often have to go.

Brendan, I'm not convinced nearly $20 with postage is good value, unless shipping for 2 packs is the same.

Steam footplate figures in OO are a different story. Unless you model in O gauge (where there are some superb castings), most castings are a bit iffy on the detail, even the expensive ones. Monty's are actually quite good. You can get cast engine crews, LH and RH (important  if you model the GWR), £2.90 a set of 2 plus however that £6.00 postage.  Bachmann OO engine crew models are already painted up. No contest as far as I am concerned.

My bad, I misinterpreted the 55p in Bill's post. But the Bachmann pack would end up being nearly $20 with postage as well..

This was brought to my attention recently:

Modelu – Finescale Figures

I think these are 3d scans of actual people.  I plan to get some 7mm figures once I have my locos.

Yes, they're superbly detailed John and the loco lamps are particularly superb. The figures are, of course, as attractive as the prototype and some seem to have eaten all the pies!

All  scales as well. Yes, they're based on real people, I remember reading about this some time ago. Not much more expensive than the cast ones either.
