From your vid, that doesn't sound too bad. Do you have any opinions on the quality of the sound, or its driveability?
At £85, it seems a good way to get a cheap sound decoder. Is the decoder an 8-pin or 21-pin type?
The reason I ask is that I can see that being used in a somewhat better model than the ex-Lima moulding Hornby are using - I have Bachmann 21-pin and Vi-Trains 8-pin equipped 37s sitting mostly idle because I prefer to run the sound-fitted ones. :hmm
Thanks for posting that anyway.
:cheers

The decoder is an 8 pin with a 28mm 8 Ohms round speaker. The latter will be a bit difficult to find room for in many other models, but it would be simple to replace with a good bass reflex.
The amp output is 1.5w or there abouts. So,very similar to a Loksound but lower than a ZIMO which, as you probably, know puts out 3W
The volume was as default. i.e. Level 4 out of 9 possible levels including 'off'
I didn't drive it, I was at Digitrains to video my Garratt and a brand new Hymek project and this happened to have arrived so I snatched a few minutes.
Quick look at the documentation suggests it has a lot of sound control features too. Manual notching, 'Thrash', return to Idle, plus all sounds have individual volume control.
And there is a way to adjust where the 'ramp up' thresholds automatically cut in. Don't even get that possibility as an end user with Loksound decoders.
Seems they have put a lot of thought into it.
There's a good deal more info, photos and another Vid here:
http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/79840-hornby-announce-dcc-sound-at-£25-a-pop/page-7#entry1745784
Remember, no sounds play on DC and the decoder is not able to be re-blown.
There are plenty of sounds to keep you amused, too; lots more than on many 'full fat' sound projects.
If you have any old LIMA models you have affection for, a quick body swap should get them back into traffic pronto. Lol.

Paul

I disposed of the last of my Lima 37s some time ago. Even my last Lima 47 survives in body only, with a Vi-Trains chassis under it (must fix up the lighting on that one!).
Thanks for the additional comments, Paul; most useful.

Bachmann models tend to require 21 pin decoders, but I suppose you could use an 8 to 21 pin converter.
The 28mm speaker will be too big for Bachmann.

I've just placed an order for the Hornby version with Digitrains. I would be interested in fitting some of my other 37's and possibly some 25's, 26's and 22's to start off with. What do you recommend. I don't mind spending money on the 37's and possibly the 22's but the rest, budget sounds would be good enough.
If you would like to recommend chips and speakers, I'd be grateful and you may just get yourself an order in the near future. Also any book that may be helpful in fitting them.
I'll look forward to blasting my neighbours ears off with the 37.
Cheers

You recall we met at my sound demo at the Perth show in 2013?
Hornby have announced TTS for a Class 40 and 47 so far, so there's no news on budget sound for Classes 24/25 or 26/27 or 22.
I have new recordings for Class 37, Class 24, 25 and Class 26, which will be released on ZIMO decoders as and when completed, and will have all the new features included.
RAIL EXCLUSIVE commissioned 5 variants of Class 47/8 sound projects for their recently released Northern Belle pair and 3 DRS back-up locos which also have all the new features too. The locos are sold out, but I expect they will be selling decoder and speaker kits shortly.
Hornby Magazine is a good read each month, and usually has one of my DCC sound fitting step by step guides in every issue. (Next month it will be a Hymek - who would have guessed?)
To get my latest news as soon as it breaks, send me your email via PMs and I'll include you on my emailing Newsletter group.
Kind regards,
Paul

I'll do that. I had not envisaged going down the sound route this early to be honest but that 37 has just changed all that.
Will you be at the Glasgow show in February ?
I may be up for your sounds for the 25's and 26's. You don't mention the 33's. I have some Heljan versions which I may add sound to as well.
I'll PM my details.
Many thanks
Toto.

That sounds very interesting. Get a demo up when it's ready. I have a couple of Heljans that will be requiring them.
Thanks again.

Hi Paul. Interested in your Hymek project. I have a Heljan version of the Hymek, is this the same loco that you are using?

Thanks for your interest.
Yes, the Hymek in the clip is my all new project in a Heljan 00 gauge model. The model is as before, but has recently been re-released.
For sales outside the EU you can get most of my projects from Digitrains. They are equipped to handle overseas sales and to deduct the VAT from the retail price.
Be careful with ordering the Class 35 at the moment. I notice the Hymek project listed is still the old one and will not sound or perform anywhere near the new version.
Best, then, to avoid confusion is to send an email specifically requesting Paul Chetter's new Class 35 (and mention that I sent you, please).
To whet your appetite, I have posted the draft User Notes on the Hymek sound thread, here:

The only thing you don't get is the ice cream I enjoyed at Minehead station. Lol
Kind regards,
Paul

I bought one of these and a Class 40 and as commented upon in these threads the sound is rather loud and I would like to turn it down, but I just wanted to check before I do. I have a Prodigy Advance system and if I recall correctly, I use CV 63 (I think) and turn it down to about 10. Does anyone know if the same can be done with these TSS decoders? I looked at the words in the instructions and it gives a completely different CV number??

All decoder brands, especially sound decoders, use different CVs for the same task (apart from the NMRA mandatory CVs of which there are only a handful).
So, follow what it says in the manual for Hornby TTS decoders, and you'll be fine.
It even gives suggested CV values if you think the overall volume is too loud or the sound balance is not to your liking.
Remember, the horns should be the loudest sound a locomotive makes in normal running.
Sound setting is simple, unlike the decoders which actually use CV63 for overall volume levels, and will take only a few minutes.
There is a volume range for every individual sound, range 0 (off) to 8 (Very Loud)
Default value of each is 4. Goodness knows why, the sounds are completely unbalanced
I suggest you start by reducing everything to value 1.
To do this, set CV182 = 1.
Then go through each sound, the CVs are listed in the manual, and adjust them to your taste.
You should only need to do this once; the decoder will retain your customised values.
Kind regards,
Paul

On reflection it was a bit of a dumb question from me, however, this was the first time that I had come across three figure CVs, so I thought I would ask. Thanks for the information and for taking the time to reply. Most helpful.
