Hoping to remove Clerestory from GW coach for conversion?

Hi All.   There's me that bloke who never finishes a kit, but goes out and buys a GWR ugly duckling on eBay , hoping to turn it into a LSWR swan. Seriously this is my hope of having at least one coach to run behind my Hornby M7.Am I wasting my time? Has anyone out there done a similar job? Or would it be better to buy a tatty GWR Loco and go slumming . Any serious replies please.  All the best. Kevin

Hi Kevin,

It can apparently be done by taking the clerestory roof off those first-rate GWR clerestory coaches and replacing with roofs from Roxey Mouldings (email for availability), ventilators and seams. I think the diner had a clerestory roof. Sort of a silk purse into a pigs ear bash.

RM carried a series of how-to-do-it articles. See the thread on rmweb http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/67897-southern-coaches-from-old-triang-clerestorys/). The Triang clerestory coaches and Ratio GWR kits are very amenable to cut and shuts. Just remember to cut twixt panels, not through them, and to reinforce from the inside with stryene overlays.

No such thing as a "tatty"* GWR engine in GWR days and most of BR days  . Rarely dirty, nearly always in first-class condition, brass gleaming, chimney glinting, paintwork a pleasing blend of green, soot and paraffin…

Hi Nigel.   Thank you for your reply. Roxey mouldings Roof you say? but I don't know what shape they are, Roundish?Flatish? or what, will Dave (of Roxey) know straight away what my requirements are? I suppose the bogies or at least the wheels will have to go if the carriage has original Tri-Ang or Hornby wheels . All the best. Kevin
