Is an exDapol pug suitable for Kadee Couplings

Hi All       ex Dapol Hornby or not?? My L & Y Pugs sit very low on the rails, I might say low down Pugs??Which leads me to the question does that mean that I require a “Match Truck/ Wagon”?? That is prototypical as National Railways (BR) have been using them for years to transfer Stock with mismatching couplings .
Or have Kadee got a Coupling to fit the bill?? Obviously that would involve a step up, which seems unlikely.
Best wishes. Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Highly likely. #17-#20 are underset, and nearly all the others are available as underset as well (semi-scale excluded). And, if you use a European NEM 362 box upside down even higher.

Hi Nigel. Thank you for your reply. The thing is,the Couplings are “Screw On”, no NEM pockets to slip the couplings in ,and just the original two screw holes. So it would be a case of butchery , and it would seem that there will be a lot of that with pre DCC and pre NEM pockets with older Locos and stock.  Best wishes. Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Drill a hole and tap it then. One thing you could try is to attach a small piece of styrene sheet using the existing screw holes, and then attach the K-D gear box to the styrene. .

Hi Nigel.  Thank you again. Do I take it then that means the coupling Hook is raised ? Doh, I was thinking that it was meant to lower the “Hook”. You didn’t mention a “#number”. Please tell me which one you would recommend.         Best wishes. Kevin

Hi Kevin,

#5 whisker, underslung. #141, 144 or 147 (depending on the length). Glue and screw gear box to the plastic or screw to the frame. You need to take some measurements before ordering a center or underslung coupler. The underslung has the arm at the bottom of the head, thus raising it. The NEM ones are all underslung.

Hi Nigel  Thank you for your reply. When you the drill holes in Models , do you use a Mini Drill? i think  that it should be straightforward with a plastic body, being an ex Dapol L& Y Pug. For such a small loco it is fairly heavy. I will have to look for Kadee in the local shops as the postage and delay in getting the goods from Australia is frustrating to say the least.   Best wishes. Hi Kevin,

Australia? As Ron points out, you can get them in the UK, as well as here I think .

Drilling holes. Minidrill is fine for metal, although I use a small battery screwdriver which runs at 800 rpm or the regular electric drill at 2000 rpm. I also use a drop of machine oil. Hand vise drill for plastic.

Hi Nigel.  Thank you for your reply.   I do have an “Archimedes Screw” type if that is what you mean? But as far as
Pug Locos are concerned, did you get the Pug loco ( not dog) that I emailed to you, and the tension lock couplers note have a central screw. As far as Australia is concerned, a long distance away, the Kadee tweezers were on eBay
And I didn’t see them anywhere else.   Best wishes. Kevin
