Decoder fitting

Hi Nigel.   Thank you for your reply . I understand that, and couldn't make how a modeller made a comment about soldering a Decoder directly to either side of the suppressor.  Going back to the permanently coupled wagon idea I haven't done anything about that yet, but my latest Pug a L&Y type with BR early logo( Lion and Wheel) has the motor in the cab, I am hoping that there is space under the boiler for a decent brand of Decoder , the cab pops off by depressing the underside clips, but I don't know how to remove the boiler, have you done one of these???All the best.  Kevin

Hi Nigel.    For my next trick? I would like to convert an Hornby Pug 0-4-0 to DCC, and have read good reports on the TCS M1 Decoder . The way the job is described on YouTube looks too easy to be true? Would you please tell me if you have you got any experience of this brand ?   All the best  Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Sorry, no (the pug or the M1). If you go to the TCS website they have a how to do it for the Pug. You only need to remove the cab. It's in the installation pictures menu, HO conversions, Hornby.

Hi Nigel. Thank you for your reply. Oh you do surprise me, I have already "Popped off the cab". The website, that is where I found it, the fact that it says just remove the cab , disconnect the black wires  and remove the capacitor ,Connect the Decoder making sure to insulate the pick up wires, put it back together sounds too easy???? Oh by the way since my 70th birthday? I have really become more clumsy, I was bad before. But last week after breakfast, I was at home, next thing I knew, I woke up on the floor in the passage. No idea what happened.
All the best. Kevin

Hi Kevin,

It actually is that easy. Disconnect the leads to the motor, attach to the decoder wires (black and red) using solder/heat shrink), connect the orange and grey from the decoder to the motor terminals. Get rid of the suppression capacitors, they could mess around with the feedback that TCS uses. You need a pointy iron tip, practice using some scrap bits of wire and heat shrink.

It's surprising how much space wire takes, you need the minimum between the decoder and the locomotive. I always use heat sinks (metal clothes pegs) on the wires, and twist them together to test before soldering up. Don't forget to slide the heat shrink on before soldering, bit difficult after.

Hi Nigel.  Thank you for your reply. I am going to take it slowly I may even try the Permanently coupled wagon idea first? I have a number of 0-4-0's to choose from in fact I could dedicate an MPD and maybe even a layout to them. Today I have been thinking " how can I build a foolproof layout for either DCC or DC with a changeover switch and wiring to isolate the track?  Or go with the original plan, and have a small DC layout with is own power supply.     All the best. Hi Nigel.  After all this time? I am in trouble. Matt dug out your instructions that you sent to me, but, I believe that in the meantime I have had too many bumps (beumps) on the head? I followed this before and know  that it worked then.It would seem that somehow my index finger is missing the spot. But I will persist. Best wishes Kevin

Hi Nigel.   18/03/2021 this is where it gets complicated for me? I followed your instructions okay originally, but, when I reach the end it goes wrong, and believe it or not, I have been taking it so slow, but I will persevere. Best wishes Kevin

Good to hear from you Kevin. Albeit under a random thread! Hope you can muster enough energy to get some modelling completed. Although you aren’t the only one who occasionally struggles to get the motivation to get going!
