point motors with 1 or 2 switches

Hello All, advice needed. i am fitting switches to my control box and i am not sure if its 1 switch for the point motors on both the single and double slip or 2 so as to work each motor independently. help and advice gratefully accepted.

I think it's 2 Alan but an "expert" will be better informed than me .,……………..

There is a method of linking two points to 1 motor for crossovers etc. but slips need each point to operate independently of the other or they won't be slips ……………;-)

Hi Alan,

With the double two point motors are required. What you have to be aware of is when wiring the frog polarity for the two motors the frog polarity wires at one end of the slip is wired to the motor at the opposite end and vice versa.

The single slip, as far as I am aware only has one moving set of blades but still requires two motors due to the need for the frog polarity to be changes at each end of the point  blades. ( each Vee )

I am not explaining this too well but maybe Sol will be able to clarify this a bit more.

There maybe a better explanation on the Rosebuddy thread somewhere as I have asked the question before. if I can find it I will pass it on. Believe it or not it really isn't complicated. I'm just not the best person to explain it I think.:mutley

Cheers

Petermac, thank you, i was going to fit 2 motors and not sure if 1 switch or 2 this applies to both double and single slips.

You'll need 2 switches Alan - as I understand it, with only 1, both points would have to operate together - that's not what you want for a slip - especially a double slip.

I'm also pretty sure a single slip also has 2 moving blades Toto ………:hmm:hmm:hmm - it's the routes that differ in that it can only "slip" in one direction whereas a double can "slip" in any configuration………….but I could be wrong …….:roll::roll:

Hi Petermac,

You could actually be right. The way you have described it sounds familiar. I only have double slips on the Rosebuddy  and I am confident of the two motors on that and that the  frogs are fed from there opposite number ( motor ).

The single slip as you say only works " one way " but unfortunately still needs the two motors.  Yep, I'm with you. :mutley.

It also has 2 frogs Toto which need wiring the same way as on the double slip - i.e. each point motor needs frog wiring to the frog at the opposite end on the slip.

Just treat the double slip as two turnouts facing each other, Alan.  Then wire the frogs to the motors on the opposite side of the slips.

You will need a single pole, double throw switch attached to each turnout motor - or on your panel if you're manually throwing the throw bar and switching the frog manually as well.

That means two switches for the set of slips.

The frog is wired to the middle pole and each of the rails is wired to each of the outside poles.

This is the type of question I like - by the time I get up, it has been answered.
Double & single slips - both need two motors and two switches.
