1. Polarity of the current feeding the LED - it will only work with the positive and negative one way round.
2. Actual power feeding it: you may need to use resistors to get the voltage right for the LED. While in the string, these things were probably taken care of but on its own, the LED probably needs you to step in and regulate the voltage.

The ones with a resistor at each LED can be used stand alone the other type need to be kept together or have a resistor added.

As Camperman says Shaun, you may need resistors in the circuit otherwise they'll blow almost immediately.

For what it's worth I'll add that my nephew, a store supervisor at Poundland, advises that these lights are not intended to be cut from the string and should only be used as supplied.
They might be cheap and are fit for purpose when used as sold but they are not intended to be a cheap way of getting multiple single lights.
