Two things to check, Shaun:
1. Polarity of the current feeding the LED - it will only work with the positive and negative one way round.

2. Actual power feeding it: you may need to use resistors to get the voltage right for the LED. While in the string, these things were probably taken care of but on its own, the LED probably needs you to step in and regulate the voltage.

As said above, plus some of these have resistors in the battery pack some have them at each LED.

The ones with a resistor at each LED can be used stand alone the other type need to be kept together or have a resistor added.

i've read you need to be careful of these pre-wired LED's.  They are balanced for power requirement by the number in the strings and often don't give a single LED rating.

As Camperman says Shaun, you may need resistors in the circuit otherwise they'll blow almost immediately.

Sound advice given above.

For what it's worth I'll add that my nephew, a store supervisor at Poundland, advises that these lights are not intended to be cut from the string and should only be used as supplied.

They might be cheap and are fit for purpose when used as sold but they are not intended to be a cheap way of getting multiple single lights.
