I found this free book on a website about explaining electronics and electricity for model trains from the British MERG site.

It is a 4 part PDF down load from this site, some of it is useful and other bits will be Double Dutch to some of us but as a reference it looks OK and there are some handy cheap projects towards the end of the fourth section
