Compared to todays definition of 'detached' these would probably now be described as having a large open aspect to the rear
There was a case several years ago with a new housing estate when the "detached" houses were built so close together that it was impossible for both neighbours to open the casement window on their half-landings at the same time on the "non-drive" side of the houses !!

The sort of thing you used to see at the top of warehouses and mills for goods coming in and out.
Health and Safety wouldn't have it nowadays.
