they look as though they have been there a while. Even if they weren't the originals there might have been some sort of fence or railings to keep the horses on the towpath!

you'll see my take on a sluice gate, the 'winding up and down bit' [a technical phrase…] I did the raising and lowering mechanism with some old Coopercraft axleboxes and the toothed slide I made by squishing [more technicalities…] some plastic strip in the jaws of a big pair of electrician's pliers, hope that helps or give you some ideas…
