Where to put the speaker

Has anyone fitted a sound decoder to a Vitrains class 47? Where is the best place to put the speaker? Had a look inside and space is limited. Thanks in advance Andy

Hi Andy,

No, but looking at the chassis there are some options.

1. Bin the circuit board, replace with hard-wired decoder, put speaker where the old circuit board went.

2. As above, position rectangular speaker over gear tower (looks to be plenty of room), in fact you could put one either end. Build up support platform with styrene strip.

3. Keep the board, speaker(s) over gear towers. This keeps the light functions.

You could probably get a thin speaker in without modification with it sitting on the board. Seal the back with adhesive foam tape.

See for a DCC non-sound and the space available over the gear towers:

After a bit of searching the internet I have managed to find a bass reflex speaker which neatly fits into the chassis of my Vitrains class 47 without having to make any modifications. The speaker is readily available from DC supplies. This is my first venture into DCC sound, I have used one of the Hornby TTS chips. Its well worth while changing the speaker, it does improve the sound quality.

It's not obvious from the photo; how is the speaker prevented from falling, cone first, onto the bogie tower?

Kind regards,

Paul

Hi Paul, if you look at the first picture, where the PCB finishes there is a recess in the metal chassis. The speaker slots into that recess, the speaker is a tight fit so therefore sits above the bogie tower. It sits about 5 mm above the bogie tower.

Andy,

Thank you for your explanation, I can see now what you have done.

Interesting use of the TTS decoder. How do you find it works in this loco and with this speaker?

Have you turned the volume down at all?

Kind regards,

Paul

Hi Paul       The TTS decoder works fine in the Vitrains Class 47, although the lights are wired the wrong way round on the decoder. You can either change the loco wiring or change the white and yellow wire around on the decoder. I haven't touched the volume as it was loud enough. The sound quality is greatly improved with the bass reflex speaker
