Hiya guys.

Anyone know where I might obtain a detailed drawing of a Midland type 4a signal box? even just one flake would suffice as I think I maybe able to work it all out from that. Just that I fancy a go at scratch building one and am unable to source a suitable drawing.

If I have a go at the scratchbuild, I will of course post a 'how I did it' thread.

This is a Midland 4a box at Culgaith on the Settle Carlisle.

Thanks for any help…..

Issue 2 of Midland Record has an  excellent article on Midland boxes.  The article includes a detailed official MR drawing of a typical box.  Anyone with an interest in MR and/or LMS should have the sets of Midland Record and LMS Journal in their library.  Midland Record can be obtained here:

http://britishrailwaybooks.co.uk/periodical/midlandrecord.php

Then again, Ratio's kit is very good.  I made a 10 x 10 box from it.

Thank you gentlemen for your interest and replies.

John: The Midland Record Issue 2 is unfortunately out of print but my local railway book shop is searching for a copy for me, I've seen one on flea bay but will wait for a reply from the book shop before chasing it.

Bittern: Thanks I've done that.

Col Stephens: Thanks for the suggestion. Having looked I feel that the Ratio kit is nearer my needs, it's a 4d but near enough if I can't find a drawing.

Hi All  I am looking for a Southern Signal Box, but I do not really know the difference, but as long as it has a wooden superstructure with an outside loo at the top of the steps on to a brick base, it would look good.

Is this what you want?

It is part of the Shillingstone Station buildings they do. It costs about £30 odd so its not cheap. You may have to alter it a bit to put a brick base onto it or repaint it in brick colour.

Hello everyone, interesting topic.
Ericplans No2 book on LMS Buildings and Structures has a 4mm scale drawing of Cheltenham (Arle Road, I think) signal box, which seems to be a type 2 box but may supply dimensions of windows, etc.  Interestingly the drawing shows square windows on the (non door) end, 2 pane deep windows ends and back with three panes to front.  All except one end have corner fillets.
As I read the Butterly link they were all pretty similar but the boarding size may vary. The concrete base being the other difference.  The Ericplans drawing has concrete bases to the vertical posts but it is impossible to say whether there is an oversite concrete - and I can't remember looking although I passed this box many times during my days in Cheltenham.
The Ericplans books have been available on E-bay although I haven't looked recently.  I am not sure about copyright otherwise I would upload a copy.  However the book has Peco as publisher and distributor and they are still around!
If I can find a photo I will upload during next few days - may have a colour one somewhere.
Hope this helps

You were right to ask about Copyright Peter and no, you can't upload the plan on here - that would infringe the rights.

What you can do is either post a link to a published drawing or even privately e-mail the plan to someone ………………you just can't post it on here (unless you have the Copyright holder's permission to do so, in which case, his ownership and permission to post should be acknowledged);-)
