A local viaduct designed by Brunel.














Standing underneath this it is quite spectacular.Shame Brunel never saw the finished article.

I used to live just around the corner from the Viaduct - just off of Brunel Road which you can see on the right where Broadsands road goes down under it in picture No.6 - and the Steam Train used to come around Crystal Cove towards it, beating hard all the way up the gradient and I used to watch  it from my sitting room window; oh boy, I sure do miss it.

Glad it's bought back some good memories Ken.There was a train going over but i was standing right underneath and couldn't get a picture.

It's great seeing pictures like these. If I ever I want to look at similar viaducts, I need to travel a fair distance out of Sydney to find gems like this. :thumbs

I wonder what the little corbels are/were for?  Do you think they provided a footing for the scaffolding/formers used to build the arches? Love to see some pictures of it being built to find out….

Doug, you've got it right.  The wooden structure, in the shape of the arch, would be stood on those corbels and was used to support the masonry as it was built over the top. I have a book with pictures therein showing the wooden structures in place whilst building Cannington Viaduct (I think).
