I'm happy to announce that our nearest Borders bookstore (well, it's 25 miles away) is now regularly selling Railway Modeller, albeit a month behind the UK.  The downside is that it's priced at $10.99.

Then I'll stop complaining :oops::oops:  It's a good magazine, and it will be interesting how the overseas subscription costs compare with those of buying it here every month.  I'll let you know.

I dropped it recently Tim.  I prefer Hornby and Model Rail but at £55 delived to France, I can't afford them all.  $10.99 seems to be around the same as overseas without the postage added.

They're pretty heavy things to cart aroud the world - maybe we should have filled Matilda with them because not everyone like mutton…………:hmm

I have done exactly what Petermac did. After over 30 years of subscribing or just buying Railway Modeller locally, I decided that Model Rail and Hornby Magazine seemed to offer a little more for my tastes and I just can't afford to keep spending on every available magazine. That's not to say there's anything wrong with RM, as it still has the best advertising blocks of any of them, with more advertisers and more pages than the others - very useful when you are overseas and trying to find obscure modelling bits and bobs not available locally.

I think most will agree who have read RM recently, it has improved dramatically

to the extent that I have stopped getting Model Railway JournalModel Trains International ( which I just took a 3 issue subscription to test it out) & will get the RM again from the local newsagent , while retaining the Hornby magazine on direct subscription.

I didn't know RM had "pulled it's socks up" Ron - as Jeff said, it's great for adverts but, at the time I stopped it, it seemed to be "more of the same" with less modelling stuff of interest to me and ever increasing advertising.  An expensive marketing tool given my tight budgets.  Hornby Mag and Model Rail were like a breath of fresh air after years of just reading RM.   I now only subscribe to Hornby Magazine but often ask relatives / friends to send me the odd copy of Model Rail.  I find if I need to know something, I come on here and ask.  Magazines are a bit of bedtime reading for me really.  Now, if I still lived in UK, things might be different………:roll:

I'll get someone to send me a recent copy of RM to see the improvement.

SWMBO made me stop my subscription to railway modeler for fear of the house needing under-pinning due to the weight of the previous 25 years issues.

I agree, RM did pull up its socks  quite dramatically. I still don't have to buy it though, as one of our local BRMA group lends me his copies now.

I haven't seen RM near me in the 'States but the Barnes and Noble chain store seem to carry both Model Rail and Hornby magazine - albeit a month or so late but that's the same as the British musician mags I buy too.

Best, Pete.
