It has come to my attention that Hatchette, the part works magazine people are going to issue, starting in December, a part work of the LNER A1/A3 Pacific locomotive 'The Flying Scotsman'. Not only that but it will be in 0 Gauge. I don't know the price yet but they usually start off with the first issue at about £3 and then ever afterward it will probably be £5. I think their mags are usually published fortnightly.

I quote :

"To celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the 1928 Flying Scotsman, Hachette Partworks have teamed up with the National Rail Museum and DJH model manufacturers to create a special anniversary edition build-up model in 0-gauge (locomotive and tender). This superb model has been researched by a team of British experts and it is an impressive and accurate replica of the Flying Scotsman locomotive as it was in 1928, when it made its first non-stop journey from London to Edinburgh. In every issue of the magazine there will be step-by-step instructions to assemble this highly detailed model."

If nothing else this is going to be an interesting one to watch.

good post bob
it would be good for your first step into loco building. however i have looked at some of these projects in magazines. a remote contol car looked great untill you worked out the total price, it was about 450 quid. it would be great if the hornby mag came out with something like this. you would have the model and the magazine infomation.

This was never going to be cheap Matt. I bet you are looking at the best part of £600 - £700.

:shock:February 2014 and it is a model of the streamlined Gresley A4. 99p part 1 and £7.99 thereafter. In small print on the back 125 issues. Total £991.75!!!!  Now I know there are some expensive 0 gauge models out there. Not sure about kits, not my scene, but this seems a bit ott.

Last model railway part work had a mk 1 coach for 99p. Bought that issue and that was it. 99p for a bit of etched brass might actually be a good deal, not sure about the next 124 though.

Must have been enough of the Flying Scotsman sold to make it worth there while doing it again.

Weekly it is 2 1/2 years, fortnightly 5 years!!!!! not sure I could last that long - or will last that long.

Interesting though, must be money in it.

I've got three of the Scotsman's to build. Progress is slow. A word of advice if anyone is thinking of going for it, wait until all the parts are in as they have a nasty habit of altering things as the build progresses. I wasn't until about 6 months into the build, after building the basic chassis, that we were told that the main frames had to be altered. The also changed the back head detail to show the change from RH to LH drive or visa versa. Mind you, as its Mallard 75 you can see why they are doing it. Cashing in on nostalgia. Feel sorry for the Diesel bods actually, they could do one of the Prototype Deltic.

Saw this A4 Part Work in W H Smiths this morning so had a look at it. Apparently it is a fortnightly magazine with a static OO gauge British loco attached. Issue 1 was Mallard, which I bought for £2.99. The next issue is £5.99 and represents the LMS Streamlined Coronation Class loco. Looking through the burb that came with it there is a different loco every fortnight, ranging from the Rocket to lowly freight locos. Could be interesting but you would need a darn big shelf to house them all on. I might pick up a couple more but I don't think I'll go for the full Monty. The loco is plastic but it has metal wheels and generally it is not a bad representation of the real thing.

I looked at that magazine this morning Mick - soon after getting off the boat in UK.  I thought it looked OK but wasn't too convinced about the model of Mallard………..:roll::roll:

You seem happy enough with it - would it be worth the future issue price of £5.99 ?

I think so while they are still available without subscription. I'm certainly going for the Coronation and possibly the GWR 2-8-0 that I think is issue 3.

I think they have done this kind of thing before as I keep seeing these static models on second-hand stalls at shows. They don't sell for much, in fact they don't seem to sell at all!

I happened to pass the local newsagent Friday, popped in picked up issue 1 with Mallard.

On unpacking, one of the front bogie wheels had become detached and was loose inside the packaging, the tender hasn't been attached to it's chassis properly and is slanted, and one of the front buffers is noticeably longer (too long) than the other.

The only other issue I might have bought is issue 2 with the streamlined Coronation Class, but at £5.99 I won't bother.

I may have just been unlucky, but the packaging was not damaged, so I can only assume it's a quality control problem.

Since it appears the NRM have put their name to this part work, I wonder if they are aware of the quality of the models being supplied.

Having had to take Mallard off of its base to replace it onto the track I don't think I will bother with the rest of them. There are so many problems involved in getting it back on again it took forever. And although it has metal wheels they do not go around and seem to be loctited solid.
