Cottage Modelling For Pendon.
Author Chris Pilton.
Published by Wild Swan Publications Ltd.
This book heads the list because it shows modelling and it's techniques at it's very best. Not many modellers reach this standard, or indeed have the time that is needed to produce such results. I have included it because it shows just what can be achieved.

A Realistic H0 Layout For Beginners.
Author : Lou Sassi.
Published by Kalmbach Books.
This is an American book by a well known author in the states and takes the reader from building a baseboard to the finished product. I have included it because as you will see the man has the ability to capture a model railway scene and is able to pass on his knowledge through text and pictures. Some of the materials used will be unfamiliar to UK modellers and not everything is applicable to our side of the big pond but you will easily get the drift and be able to adjust his advice to fit your particular model. His methods are easy to follow and the results very natural.

An Approach To Model Railway Design.
Author : Iain Rice. Published by Wild Swan Publications Ltd
A slightly different approach by one of model railways best known writers. Well worth reading and adding to your library as there is a lot of thought provoking stuff here plus pages of inspirational layout ideas.

The Model Railway Design Manual.
Author C.J.Freezer.
Published by Patrick Stevens Ltd
Another doyen of the model railway world known by thousands of modellers through his books, press writings, track plans etc. Much helpful stuff on train and track formations and operating the railway as well as advice on what to put where, plus some different layout plans.

60 Plans For Small Locations.
Author C.J.Freezer. Published by Peco Publications.
A small 32 page booklet that gives much food for thought for those of us with a more limited space at our disposal. The layouts are designed for 4mm scale 00 gauge but that doesn't mean they cannot be used by other scales and gauges for their ideas or with adjustments for size differentials. A very inexpensive introduction to layout planning and highly recommended.

Track Plans For Various Locations.
Author C.J.Freezer.
Published by Peco Publications.
Here's another small helping from C.J.Freezer on track plans. A classic collection of over 30 designs, drawn and decribed mainly for 4mm scale 00 gauge they can easily be adapted to other scales and gauges. The locations deal with all kinds of areas from garages to spare rooms. Once more a very inexpensive but great addition to any railway modellers library.

The Railway Modeller Book Of N Gauge Track Plans.
Author C.J.Freezer.
Published by Peco Publications.
Another of this authors inexpensive booklets, this time aimed specifically at N gauge, it shows the kind of layout that makes many 4mm scale modellers drool with envy. A must for anyone in the planning stage of N gauge who might need inspiration or a little push in the right direction.
