The link above tells you all you need to know about making a spline sub-roadbed. Lots of relevant pictures as well.

Here are some photos of a spline sub-roadbed under construction on my N gauge GWR, West Wales layout. (More of which can be found in the personal layouts section)

I like spline sub-roadbed construction, it makes transition curves easy. Both horizontally and vertically.

4 out of 10 splines glued and clamped in place to dry.
