Don't expect any response to this but I just needed to share the fact that after 6 months I have finished the baseboards around what is now my railway room. 12 boards all approximately 1200 x 700 built in the usual way using 45 x 30 frames, half lap joints, glued and screwed topped with 10mm marine ply (it gets damp here), fixed to battens on the wall at the back with legs at the front made from old pallets. Two lift out sections where the door and window is and holes below to take the DCC buses.

I had a splurge of effort over the past two days and am now well and truly cream crackered, so if anyone reads this then please accept a vitual drink from me.

Have you given overall dimensions before Les? If you have then I have forgotten them so could you tell us again please. Well done by the way, fine effort and very worth while.

Thanks Phill/Bob very kind of you. :D

Bob, the dimensions are 7.85metres x 2.6metres. I have never had a thread on personal layouts because a)I thought you started with a track plan and although I have one, it is written on 6 pieces of A4 paper (I have now photographed it but it is hard to read the details) b) progress is so slow that I would have nothing to report c) I was too scared in case it all went wrong whereupon I could just ride off into the sunset.

Les looking at your layout i take it that it is not a continous track, so do's that mean a Perry turntable is on the cards  :D .

This looks great.  I know just how you feel when you get the base boards completed.  Now we will see the layout come to life.  The track plan looks impressive too, it seems like a big station complex in the making?

I really think you should open a thread in the Personal Layouts section Les and start it off with the photographs you have here. You don't have to have a proper layout name until you are ready for one, call it anything you like. We have an unsatiable interest in other members layouts and it doesn't matter how slow progress is. The thing is with a Personal Layout we always know where to go for the latest info on it or to remind ourselves about something.

Wow! You really have been busy!    I hope you fitted in a little bit of 'testing' time along the way.

I'm seriously impressed, Les.

well done les
i have just taken up all my baseboards to have another crack at the whip. open up a layout thread, that way if you ask a question people can look back at your posts\pics etc and come up with an answer   and it keeps it all in one place. i don't post on my layout for a couple of weeks at a time as things are moving slowly.

Very impressive, Les - in size as well as quality. A presonal layout thread is obligatory  :D   The lack of a track plan never upset anyone. I sure didn't worry about it

P.S.  at least I HOPE it never upset anyone

i wish i had a room like this, a loft is ok but you are restricted with the head clearance, bending over etc. i will be moving house in the next couple of years and the first thing on the list is rail room or garage. :D

That looks very impressive Les.

Wish my layout was that far on - it must be very rewarding to get to the stage of what it's all about.  We're railway modellers, not cabinet makers although, from what I've seen on here, there are a few members who could easily do either.

Looking forward to updates.

I've already said how impressed I am with Les' benchwork, but don't get put off by the prospect of building a solid base, Petermac.  One thing I have learned is that by following a few basic rules, measuring carefully and having a sharp saw ( ) anyone can do it.
