I have been having a runaround with Hattons & Dapol re wheel standards

The only answer I can see is to get the flanges reduced.

"No QC, no QA, not my problem". Looks like a job for Ultrascale Gears. 


One thing you might want to check before turning down the rims is glued-on ballast on the chairs. Any idea if this Peco specific, or does it apply to other code 75 track? 


GWR rail in the 1930s was at most 90lb, which corresponds to code 75. Pity Dapol didn't do their homework. Or follow NMRA RP. And assumed we all still use code 100  Set Track.

I will be testing it on a layout with un-ballasted Code 75 next week but on mine all good on track, just bumps & humps thru turnouts, etc
The supplier of Dapol parts did indicate that they
"have no means to test if they do. I'm not 100% sure if there were any charges done to this model when it was rerun. All I can say is that the spares we have are from the latest run of the model. So if any changes were made, the bogies we have will have the changes. "

I would be absolutely blowing my top Sol. 

I just go ballistic when manufacturers have the sheer cheek to send out sub-standard models then admit they "don't know the answer" !!  They flaming well should know.  They should know every single millimeter of their product.  It just says "we don't really care - we just want to take your money and send you whatever we can be bothered to send "

I'd send it straight back and demand full repayment of all costs - although that doesn't get you your railcar…………..

Over here model locomotive companies make great efforts to make sure what they make meets NMRA standards and gets a "Conformance Certificate". Which means among other things wheel profile, back to back, and DCC decoder if fitted. The results are published in the NMRA magazine.  Keeps manufacturers honest because it's NMRA members who buy a good proportion of what goes on the market. I doubt this model would make the cut. Looks like Dapol are depending on the Chinese to do the QC and QA. Bit like asking the fox to keep the hens safe.

The flanges on the Express parcels van from Dapol using the same bogies, has finer flanges than my railcar - even visually, the difference is obvious. Tried it on an unballsted layout - yes OK but with any slight ballast sticking up, the flanges find them  - the only motive power unit of my fleet of 28 that does this.

That bodes ill for hand laid track with scale chairs or the code 70 or 50 that I like to use. Looks like you have several choices. Go over the track with a metal pick and magnifying glass and remove any bits of ballast on the inside of the rail/chairs, grind/turn down the rims, see if you can get some replacement wheels from Ultrascale/AGW. They're stub axles, so turning them down may be the best option (and the only one unless a wheel set from a different model fits). if you can get your operations crew to spend an evening going over the track……

In fact DCCSupplies , the Dapol spare parts, people are sending me two new bogies under warranty to see how they go.

I got the wheels out of the dummy bogie OK but trying to get the keeper plate off the power bogie is very tricky & DCC Supplies is looking into that as well

Replacement bogies arrived today & even without using a gauge, one can see that the flanges on these are finer than the originals - just now have to work out how to get into works …
