Transfesa fruit vans/ ferry wagons makers???

Hi All.    In the years that I was out of the model railway hobby, nearly fifty, I did a lot of sightseeing , mostly by train all over Europe. But one group of wagons that hold fond memories are the ones stabled at Paddock Wood, and there always seemed to be shed loads?   Transfesa fruit vans/ ferry wagons makers???     All either waiting to be unloaded or run back empty. My question being"Was there any OO scale models made of them, and if so who was the manufacturer , and were they sold in the U.K.

Triang/Hornby did, and still offer, a ferry van, although it is not up to modern standards. Past liveries have included Transfesa, BR bauxite and RailFreight red and grey.

The latest offerings have the smaller couplings fitted and metal wheels. I have retro-fitted metal wheels to my examples, added weight and also restricted the swivelling axleboxes with Blu-tack, all of which have improved the reliability of their running.

Hi Jeff. Thank you. I am looking for the "Transfesa Vans" in particular , I do understand about up to date vans being of a higher quality though. I have read an online thread about dismantling the vans, cutting them about? Rebuilding, Replacing wheels etc  to bring them more into line with OO and have better running. Trouble being I have been buying stock without having a decent size layout , although the baseboards are ready and waiting.   Kevin

Some Triang/Hornby ferry vans: the Transfesa was an original livery offered by Triang-Hornby and is a bit gaudy in self-coloured plastic. The BR 'flying crate' livery was also offered fairly early in the life of the model Hornby have offered a RailFreight livery in recent years as well as a de-branded BR bauxite livery, but my RailFreight one is actually a repaint and has not had all of the insignia added yet. I might shave off the overscale door handle/handrail and replace it with wire in the near future.

Hi Jeff. Thank you for your reply.shuffle the vans around and they will almost look like Red White and Blue? Perhaps an " Interfrigo Van" would fit in? Do you weather your stock at all??   All the best. Kevin

I do weather stock, but the rate of weathering seems to have fallen well behind the rate of acquisition! 

   

Hi Jeff.   Thank you . I know the feeling too well, I buy all sorts of stock new and old, with plans to change the appearance , either by cut and shut, weathering ,or changing the transfers. And they sit in their boxes in packing cases and wait, and wait.   All the best.  Kevin
