Dapol coal loads and couplings

Hi. All.  I am not “knocking anyone” because my kit building skill does not beat my enthusiasm for purchasing kits, most of which are awaiting my attention . At the time of writing , I am bodging Dapol wagons by removing the coal loads, wagons do run empty, I have a plan to make coal loads that are easily removed.I am replacing the NEM pockets with Kadee 146 Couplings. This exercise has raised an issue, the same screw that attatches the body to the chassis holds the load in place, but the body will glue to the chassis, which leaves a gaping hole that needs to be filled in to match the planks. the question is “what with”? another thing is the chassis, obviously plastic, would a coat of paint improve the look? and later weathering ? Please advise. Best wishes. Kevin

Put a false floor in from lead sheet scribed to match planks, paint & weather and the lead gives additional weight that is needed.
