1st venture into loco building/3D printing

Hi Everyone,

Any members of the N gauge forum will recognise this but seeing there aren't many N gaugers on this forum I thought I would show you the latest project I am undertaking. As there is no RTR model of the Gloucester Class 128 parcels unit in N Gauge, the only options are kits or the way I am doing it. The way I am constructing the loco is with a dummy Class 121 chassis (because of price) that is fixed to a 3D printed 128 body that has to be painted, transfers, handrails and exhausts added. I hope to show you my progress as I go.

It will be painted BR Blue with full yellow ends to make it simple.

Wow. That is quite an undertaking! Did you do the 3D printing?

No, I didn't do the 3D printing, the design is by one of the Ngaugeforum members and it is printed by Shapeways.

Well after a bit of a wait on this topic, the primer and yellow ends have now been completed, hope to do the blue soon, tomorrow preferably.

More progress has been achieved on the 128.


This one shows the body after 2 coats of Rail Blue. All the paints used were Railmatch acrylics as we can't get enamels imported into Australia.


The roof after 2 coats of BR coach roof grey.


The body finished with all the masking peeled off. I am pleased with the result.


The painted body next to the donor model, makes an interesting comparison with the first post.


The body loosely sitting on the chassis. It was a bugger to get off the 121 body, ended up cutting wires for the lighting but I don't see this as a huge loss. Next step is transfers, exhausts, glazing and painting the buffer beam black instead of the red suited to the green 121.

Sorry for the wait seeing final pictures of the 128. I am fairly happy with the final model considering it was my first shot at a 'repaint.' I know the transfers are not correct for the model (could not find the correct running number types and there should be 'Service' after Parcels) but I can live with that, the exhausts are not perfect either (made out of painted solder) but again none existed and I can live with the look.
I reckon I will get more 3D printed stuff in the future after this project.

A really good job there with the 3d printing a number of models can be produced now as long as one can source a similar or right chassis.

Yes if a suitable chassis is available, 3D printing gives a lot of options. Coincidentally, I read in the Model Rail this month that Revolution Trains are bringing out a RTR 128 in N gauge :roll: but I won't be getting one, don't have enough space and I am happy to have this one run with the Blue 122 I have or on the back of my parcels train.

I actually entered this model in a modelling competition in as part of the British Railway Modellers of Australia Convention last month but unfortunately did not win. I was unlikely to do so as it was up against two kit built O gauge locos and a scratch built EM loco. Oh well, such is life.
