The 'Kirby' coupling system involves attaching bent paperclips to the bottom of the Hornby tension lock couplings and then using magnets to uncouple.

There's a lot of threads on here about it and I had a fair bit of success with the system when I had an 00 layout.

Thanks Ed, I’ll look into different options using the original hornby couplers. My telescopic magnet is doing a fine job for now.
