Suppliers

It used to be possible to obtain etched plates for trackside signs such as " Beware of Trains" ,  "Whistle" etc  etc - I believe they were made by Smiths . However I dont think these are available any longer and I cannot find any reference to similar items on the directory and I wonder if anyone knows of a supplier ?

Cheers

The signs you are after are still available from Smiths which is part of Scalelink.

Here's a link to their website..

Hope this is helpful.

That's a good link Frank and one that was missing from the Equipment Index. It's not now of course. Thanks again.

Many thanks Frank - I had not realised Smiths were now under the Scalelink banner which is probably why I could not find it.

Cheers

You also get those signs in the Ratio SR fence kit. All well and good if you want some concrete fence posts. Good kit though, and the posts would make nice loads if nothing else.

A handy link.  So handy I already placed an order.  But beware their overseas postage charges.  My order is going via the folks to save me paying what I consider an unrealistic mark-up on the postage.

I just wondered if unrealistic postage and packing  charges for items being sent overseas from Uk suppliers is much of a problem for forum members and if so whether it may be possible to do something about it via the membership . For example if ordering from a number of suppliers its all sent to a Uk member  or the Uk member makes up the order from their local model shop and  then forwards a single package.

Just a thought.

Cheers

I've made a couple of purchases from Kernow so far.  Chris' prices have been very good and his postage charges very reasonable.  :thumbs

Chris, and many other retailers, will charge postage based directly on the weight and volume of the package and I certainly don't object to a little extra on that to cover their costs of packing materials and staff time.

I did baulk at being asked to pay ScaleLink's standard overseas rate of £10 postage to ship an order which costs less than that in total and would be slipped into nothing larger than a medium padded envelope.

That was the cheapest of three options as well!

There are many smaller businesses and one-man operations who seem to run with "standard charges" no matter what size the package.  It is also a common theme on eBay.

Their Uk rate is not much better value at £5 particularly if you only want a couple of items that would actually cost less than £1 to despatch .

Richard, I deleted your duplicate post.

If you think that postage from UK is high - try postage  from USA to here - bleeding outrageous !!!

Actually we do OK in Aust  for goods from the UK, VAT is taken off so after postage added on, it is almost the same as the retail price  in the first place

Unbelievable.  Here is a business that we stock in our shop and they have things in the range I have never seen before that link was posted!  We would happily stock these if I had known about them so will sort that next week when I am back at work.  It does amaze me sometimes how some of these businesses do no promotional work at all…

And had Chris been aware of and stocked those items I went shopping for I would only be paying Chris's postage rates.  In other words they would have been slipped into the next parcel at probably no extra cost and which should be departing Camborne very soon.

You can make signs for your railway very easily

Work harden a length of copper wire, and using the Trev method of recycled margarine or yoghurt containers cut some squares to your size.

Make up some sticky labels on your computer… laser printers work better than inkjet … and stick them on your sign squares/rectangles etc.

Superglue the sign to the copper wire and cut to length to suit planting in your baseboard. Make sure it is painted in your corporate colour first.

You can also use this method to make road and street signs for literally pennies.

Excellent tip - if you have a printer - which I dont so its not an option .

However since making the first post a number of new Smiths sets of signs have come up on ebay shop sites and I have managed to get the ones I wanted at a fraction of the delivery cost that Scalelink required.

Hi there,

If you don't have a printer, you could still use your very best lettering hand or use letra set type rub on lettering.

If you work out a set of pictures or signs and sizes I could print them up for you and put it in an envelope and it is not much more than a standard letter…

Let me know,

Regards

Hi Trevor

One of the best things about this forum is the offers of help from other members  so freely given. Many thanks for yours - I may indeed take you up on it next time I need some signs.

Thanks again

Just to add….
A lot of railway notices were cast iron mounted on to lengths of old rail for posts, before being "planted " where required.
Here's a couple of such signs I made ages ago
I used MS Publisher to print the signs, mounted on thin card and then attached to the rail posts with two part epoxy.
BTW. I used bullhead rail, not the flat bottom stuff that Peco make.

The station running in board is not home made! They are langley Models items.
