Ballast Box Trucks?

Lledo produced a number of short vehicles in various liveries called 'Ballast Box Lorries'. One is illustrated below. Does anyone know what their use was and how they were deployed across the railway. Looking at this one it appears to be used as a maintenance truck, with all the stuff in the back - but why not just use an ordinary truck?

Any help would be gratefully received.

I don't know Bob but it may have something to do with the very short wheelbase. Presumably it doesn't convert to a trailer truck?

Ah, that makes sense Ron. I was thinking that the box on the back had something to do with Railway ballast and these were in some way engineering vehicles, but it seems the box is purely to add weight to increase traction. Glad I asked.
