I kept looking at my BirchTree Golf Course and felt there was something missing. I'm not sure if this is it, but I do like the result.
Last night I made several rocks using Hydrocal and one of my moulds of rock outcroppings (Woodland Scenics). This first picture shows where I decided to place them on the course. I am adding five rocks. Only four show up in the first several pictures though.
The trouble was the backs of the rocks are flat and my surface is very contoured, so out came the trusty Dremel Tool. I traced around each rock with a pencil so I knew where to cut.
I carved down between 1/8" and 1/2" to place the rocks at the level I felt looked the best. You can see the gaps around each rock.
All the rocks are now recessed down to the level I liked. Where I had ground out too much material I just used tooth picks stuck down into the foam to shim the rock back up.
I mixed up some more Hydrocal and wet the back side of each rock and plaster in each hole. This slows down the curing of the Hydrocal so I had time to fill in the gaps. The first one I tried I didn't wet it out and I couldn't even get the rock down all the way into the hole before the Hydrocal was solid. So I put my tail between my legs and went and read the manual. It said to wet everything first, let me tell you, that works super. One should always read the manual.
And here are the finished rocks all painted up.
This is a side image showing the elevation of the rocks sticking up out of the ground.
A good close up of one of the rocks and the golf cart culvert.
That's a big improvement once again, Wayne. I'd be tempted to cut the top off the culvert face level with the top of the ridge line. Just a suggestion . . . ;-)
The rocks certainly look good to me Wayne. :thumbs
When I looked at the first photo, I thought "oh dear, not sure I like that" !! It's amazing what a difference some playing around with depth and a paint bush can make to a scene. They look as if they've been there since the earth was formed and sit really well in the golf course environment. Good crisp mouldings too - I like the look of Woodland Scenic stuff. ;-);-)
Definitely looking good there Wayne. Woodland Scenics products are just about idiot-proof provided you take time to read the instructions first. Keep us posted on your progress. And on how many double-bogeys are scored after landing in the rough around those rocks!
That's looking really good Wayne, maybe you could position a couple of temporary figures and take another picture to get some prospective re the size of the rocks and bunkers :thumbs

I'll see about that Kev. My next goal is to get the "rough" planted along the fairways. A photo would then look a lot better!
