Finally gettiing out of my system.

Hi Terry
I have used the Wills system and will use it again on the new Yarslow. I found it easier to mount the rodding bases on a small square of 30 thou plastic card to make the heights work. I use code 75 Peco track. Did you have similar issues?

Hello Barry.  Thank you for your query and sorry for the delay in answering.  No, I didn't have a problem with the height.  I am using C&L plain track and Peco points.  The plain track is mounted on card to bring it up to the height of the points.  The rodding bases are glued directly to the baseboard surface.  All is ok as far as I am aware.

Hi Terry.  I do hope that I haven’t asked this question before, but, would you please tell me the manufacture and matt colours of the paint that you used for your Southern wooden buildings. I know that they are green and some sort of yellowish colours, but, further than that I don’t know.  Best wishes Kevin.

Staying on the thread Kevin.

Hello Kevin.  Sorry for the delay in replying to your last post.  I appear to have deleted the message so will answer your query here.
If you look back to the pictures of the signal box, the green  is Humbrol Acrylic Authentic Rail Colour No. RC 408.  The main body colour isn't actually yellow but a shade of light buff. To replicate this I purloined some paint from my wife's craft shed made by 'Paper Artsy'. This particular paint is from a range called 'Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics' and the colour is called 'Butternut'.  I actually mix it with some white acrylic to make a light buff.  The official Southern railway name for it was 'Stone 1A'.

I would recommend a book called Station Colours, privately published by Peter Smith, which covers the paint schemes of quite a few railways.  The expanded fourth edition (with brown cover) is now available.

Hope this helps,

Terry

Well, the point rodding is finally finished and I think it improves the look of the layout.  The next job was to run the signal cable from the signal box to the site of the ground signal.  The small post which support the signal cables were made from short lengths of 40 thou square plastic strip with a slither of plastic rod attached to represent the pulley wheel on which the cable runs.  The signal cable is .25mm nylon thread which fits nicely around the superb 3D printed signal pulleys.  The SR ground signal is constructed from an etched brass kit which is held together with superglue.  Here are a few photos to give the flavour of how things are looking at present:

Once the point rodding and signal cables were done I was able to move above the buildings and complete the telegraph wires.  Fine black E Z Line was used for this.  If you look closely at the following pictures you might just make them out:

Thank you both.

Peter, the track weathering is no more than diluted brown acrylic paint applied with a brush.

The rodding (or Roddenberry as my phone tried to autocorrect it to.. twice!) looks brilliant. It really adds to the track. I have some very basic wires on Teasel, you’ve given me the shove I need to revisit it and make improvements!
Your track work in general looks amazing too!

That’s superb Terry!
Point rodding is fiddly stuff but it really authenticates the track.

Bravo.

A few more details added to the track today…

Etched brass point levers by Shire Scenes from Dart Castings.  Assembled with superglue and stuck to a card base.

Terry, I would be delighted if my track and ballast looked half as good as yours.  But with  the extra detailing, it really is at another level.  Lovely work, I know just how much patience and craft goes into making it so realistic. :cheers

Thank you for your kind words Michael.  I am finding it quite enjoyable to add these fine details. Currently working on some seafoam trees to add to the rear of the layout.  More on this shortly.
