I'm planning a structure build for Piedmont Blues, and am starting with a small Clevermodels kit - in this case the Brick Garage with Loft - and changing it into something totally different.

The idea is to use Clevermodels textures for the brickwork, and the roof, which will be sheet metal. The rest will be made from card and wood.

At least, that's the plan!

I'm not sure what industry this could be, though it wont be a rail served structure.  The layout is set in 1965 - any suggestions on what it could be would be most appreciated. :)

The idea is that the original garage structure has been built on top of, the roof removed and a new, flat work area with an enclosed staircase up to both it, and the timber and clapboard tower structure.

I intend to build the structure in the way it would have actually have been built in "reality".

So, the garage structure will take centre stage at the beginning of the build. On top of that, I'll add timber cross beams, and build upwards from there.

I'll post progress photos as and how it goes. :)

That's the way I'd like to do it, Daniel.

Good luck with it.  I'll be watching with interest.

Cheers Max. If it comes out looking even half as good as one of your builds, I'll be a happy man!

Progress! :D

The basic shell is coming together nicely.

The garage itself is made from a core of artists mounting board - great stuff - and wrapped in the Clevermodels kit textures. I'm going to be having the doors/windows closed on the bottom floor, so the white interior won't matter. :)

The rest of the structure is made up of 1/36" basswood strip, and basswood sheet with planks enscribed on one side.

This is going to be a very interesting model, I look forward to seeing this evolve. The drawing you have done looks almost like a backwoods narrow gauge type of structure, Brilliant!

I realised today that I've not actually updated this thread in a while!

Thanks for the kind comments, Max and Robyn :)

Progress has been slow, granted, but this is as far as I've gotten to date:

Further progress to come…

Looking good, I love the floor joists (I think that is what they are called) that are easy to see and all the timber work gives this a rustic and well used 'feel' about it. Have you figured out an industry for the structure yet?

Thanks Robyn. I'm really enjoying making this, even if it is requiring me to build parts I wouldn't normally bother with in smaller scales.

Still not figured out what the industry will be yet, no. :)

Yesterday's progress on the garage/tower building.

Today I'm going to be building a few boxcar kits, so I'm not sure if I'll get any more progress done on the structure for a little while.

Wow, so much detail, it is a pity it is hidden. The structure of the roof and some of the other detail makes me wonder if you are a builder by trade????? What is the timber you are using? is it balsa wood?

Nope, I work in IT!

I just did an image search of what rafters should look like and went from there.

The doors on the upper floor will be open on the final model, and it will be lit with LED lighting, so you should be able to see inside it when it's on the layout.

The wood is a mix of basswood strips and basswood sheet with a planking effect laser cut into it.

I have no idea who makes it, but I got it from Hobbycraft a long time ago. I don't think they stock it anymore.

Amazing, thank you for letting me know about the timber. I look forward to seeing more progress on this in the future. Are you going to put a post about your wagon building?
