At scratchbuilding a wagon

using Kirks ( a real old kit)  sideframes, glued to 2mm card floor, walls are  card covered with paper strips  ( created in EXCEL) representing planking
wheels by Bachmann

Looking good so far Sol, one almost complete and seven to go ! ;-);-)   You would have to be happy that you don't have to construct the sideframes.

I made some card wagons for my Jack's layout some time ago, but these were direct copies of a 'Troublesome truck' from the Hornby Thomas collection, on an old Hornby brake van underframe.

I don`t know Ron.?????…..add some weathering to that wagon….maybe a load inside and I reckon it`ll look pretty damn good.

looks good to me ,rust a bit heavy maybe, but I live 5 mins from a dissused siding and the trucks on there are far worse

I reckon that's a great first effort Ron. I just wonder if it would have been easier to scribe the planks onto the card rather than use seperate strips of paper. The strapping is very effective.

Given the materials you've used there Ron, that wagon looks pretty good I'd say!

IMHO I reckon if you were using a paper based card, the scribing would not look as good as paper strips. The card tends to swell slightly with the addition of paint and the scribe marks become less defined. If you were to use plastic card however, the scribe marks would be unaffected and give you that crisp finish that we all desire.
Personally, I like the choice of paper strips. They give that plank by plank individual look but they must be a pain to apply to the model.??

I think it looks great and I like the paper strip idea. A bit of a change in method from the usual plastic. Nothing wrong with plastic, just good to have a bit variation.

I had tried scribing card before but… not impressed & yes, individual strips take a bit of time but do give a better look IMO. The paper is all sprayed with matt varnish after printing before cutting out into strips & I use a colouring pen to go over the white edge of the paper.

Not a big fan of card but I have been reading an article in Hornby magazine ( October ), and in it they were on about scribing card for their buildings and before starting they coated the card with pva and let it dry, they used a scriber with a blunted/rounded tip and I must say it was impressive!

Welcome to the wonderful world of scratchbuilding, your wagon looks great. I can't wait to see the next model. I have found a way to set up card strips and get the spacing even. Simply use dressmaking pins (with the glass heads) as spacers on your base material and when you want to remove them you just twist them gently. There are some really thin pins available these days and they give a good spacing. I have scribed card in the past with great results but I had to modify the tool used. I will see if I can get a photo of the scriber that I use.

That planked wagon looks great - I love the strapping and I think the slight gpas etc. make it look "used".  As Gormo said, a bit of weathering and it will be first rate. Well done indeed. thumbs:thumbs

The hopper wagon has some strange angles in it but you've conquered that problem superbly.  I'm looking forward to the passenger car - or can you just use a narrow gauge "tumbril" and show it taking miners into the pit ……………..:roll::roll::roll:
