Designing a 4-wheel coach for my dad's 3-d printer

Hi all! today I'm trying out google chrome, so I can insert photos! Anyways, a while ago my dad bought a 3-d printer and I was all ready playing around with google sketchup, so I though I could design something train-related, I did a tardis that turned out OK but after that I droped the designing… So all that to say, I have all the resources but not the "kefi" (greek for will). I have the hornby caledonian belle which has a 4-wheel coach (similar to a stroudley coach) and wanted some more so I started designing one. this is where I will record my progress. I have to go do more school though now :thud but hopefully I'll post my progress later and my basis. :) thanks  for reading!

Best of luck with the 3-d venture Darius. It would be great to design and manufacture your own coachs.
Regards,
Derek.

Hi Darius

You might find that Chrome struggles with this forum.  If you have trouble posting photos, try Firefox.

Darius,

Learning 3D modelling and printing skills is a great thing to do and will be very useful to you later on.

Take your time, are you taking your measurements from the existing model? If you are, measure 3 times, model once.

Cheers

Thanks Derek :) I was thinking the same!
Thanks for the tip Max I'll see when I post my photos.
Thanks Marty, I'm struggling a bit but I'm only designing a "rough" draft. That I can slowly add more detail every time I print it. I'm getting the measurements off of the hornby 4-wheel coach (R219, I think?) it's the one that comes with the Caledonian Belle train set.

So I'm going to try and insert a photo…… NOW!
This is what my basis is:

and this is how I'm designing the windows. I'm only designing half the coach, and then when it is finished, I'l copy it, flip it (flip along component's red for you curious folks) and attach them at the seam!

hopefully that worked!

Firefox will happily run on an older machine, to be honest the way google are going with chrome trying to make it faster, all they are doing is making it more and more incompatible and bundled with apps that you dont need that they think you do....

Ah.  A Mac.  There's your problem.

There are special ways to get Macs to post photos.

Not my area, but I'll ping one of the Mac boys to help you.

I don't use Firefox and can't comment on it's ways other than to suggest your computer might not have enough RAM available to run it.

You use Mac OS X 10.5  That's also quite old now with the current version being 10.10 (a/k/a Yosemite), a resource-hungry but powerful operating system.

Somewhere between the two the problem might lie.

I posted the method by which I upload pictures from the Mac a long time ago.  I'll try to find that post and link to it.

Have a look at this Darius

Firefox no longer works with Mac OS X 10.5 | Firefox Help

If you scroll down there is a link to download Firefox 16, but use at your own risk.

That's ok Andy! Sorry I haven't posted for ages, I was really busy! Anyways, this topic… is…. well I kinda gave up, because we tried to print the coach, and…. the printer went crazy, I'm gonna try and watch videos on designing for printing, because I can design, but I have issues when I try to print it. OH…. WAIT! My computer crashed! I lost all my work! yeah… it happened. Finally. so I won't be posting on this thread anytime soon! Sorry guys!
