Why SWMBO thinks I have lost the plot
That pic reminds me of Hell on Earth, Jeff, otherwise known as Abercwmboi coking plant. The fumes, desolation and acrid atmosphere had to be experienced to be believed.

Mostly contained within the site already quoted but specifically here:-
All Things Treacle - Ancient Mines
There used to be a large glass case outside the information centre at Worthing Pier which contained a 3D relief map of the area. And quite a sight that was as well. We used to spend ages looking over that as youngsters while waiting for the bus home.
Sompting Treacle Mine was included on that map as the page notes. Then one day it had gone. We never knew the full story. But the existence of the mine was occasionally referred to in the local papers which at that time were the Worthing Gazette and Worthing Herald. They merged into one many years ago.
In a curious link to our own common areas of interest I can relate that one of their reporters, who was known to me as the father of a school friend, was one of those who made mention from time to time. Sadly this wisdom was lost as he was one of the five (later reports state six; the official report confirms five) people who died in the Purley train crash (04/03/1989) when two expresses tried to merge onto the same track with the result that one was pushed down a high embankment. Passing that site now always brings back a pang of memory and it also makes me one of the relatively small number of people who has known someone whose life ended in a train crash.
Phill - you are very close to the Sompting mine as the actual location of the entrance (a closely-guarded secret to all but the staff) lies near the Hillbarn Estate.
