Decided to paint the shed today, I used Cuprinol Ducksback Silver grey and it looks a treat! Could not photograph it as it was nearly dark when I finished but will try later in the week!Electrics next, got all the bits but need to sort out the circuit in the house first!!

Quick question before I install the Weybourne/Sheringham layout into the shed, what height is the best for viewing/operating?I set it at 38" in the old shed due to some low windows but this time there is no restriction, so is 48" to high or about right??

Cheers

Hi Ron.   A question of height? It is not so much as "Viewing" but if you are tall or short? and being able to work/ make adjustments thereon, once the trains are running. I have my baseboards set at the top (or higher) end of your range because of a backache, with frequent breaks sitting on a high stall.   all the best.   Kevin

Staying on the thread Kevin.

At what height does leaning over to reach the back of the layout start to become a problem?  Maybe set the height a few inches below that, so your back will allow long periods in that position.(like when ballasting or working on back scene). Conversely set it too low and your back will complain anyway!

Thanks,  I'll try it at 48" before screwing everything down. The boards are only 24" wide so not to far to reach and not too bad on the back!

Here's a quick photo, wood is at the new 48" and the cable set at the old 36" high, tested it with a 24" wide board and no reaching problems (and easier to work underneath!). Also finished insulating the shed, the doors being the last thing!

Hi Ron.

Regarding baseboard height.
My baseboards are 38" high & 18" wide around the walls.
I'm 5'.11" & I find that height ideal for reaching over for any length of time. Unless you are much taller 48" is a long way to reach in with a baseboard width of 24" unless you can reach in from both sides.
I would suggest fixing a length of 24" wide baseboard at various heights to see how it works for you.
I'm 65 & I find sitting on a bar stool ideal for the back with a baseboard height of 38". It laso gives you a great view of the layout.

Another thing in passing.
Whats under your floor as that's where a lot of the cold will come from. A layer of insulation with laminate flooring on top would help to keep the cold out.
I see you have been putting in insulation. You can never have too much of it.

Tony.

Hi Tony, I will experiment with the height when I move the boards in, I expect it will be about 40"-45" high to be comfortable!! Under the floor there is a barrier sheet, decking and the base but I will be adding a carpet when we change our bedroom carpet very soon. I'm 67 and my back ain't what it used to be so I will be making sure it's the right height!!  :)

Ron, when you're happy with the height, check that you can stretch over to reach the back, unless the width of your baseboard is going to be narrow.

Settled on 41" high. Have screwed a batten on the shed back complete with a piece of 24" wide hardboard to test the width/reach etc.. So I can get on with the electrics now!! :)

Sounds like a good height Ron.
Any higher & you might be struggling to get at the back of the 24" width baseboards especially while trying to work on them.

A step stool or a wooden box that you can stand on helps with reach on higher boards.

Hi Ron,

You've made sturdy progress if the fiddle yard is also finished, as you can now have operating sessions. Well done and I hope Weybourne /Sheringbourne goes from strength to strength.

The higher baseboards  makes for some great photos!

Bill

At 6'4'', Bill is a tall chap, then again, when horizontal he is rather long and people often used to trip over him! . . . and so a nickname was born :)
