Station set on the North Norfolk coast.

I had an email back from DC Concepts re; the decoder problem, (only 5 out of 8 that work!):

"Hi Ron,Thank you for the  pictures. I think what has happened here is that a small short occurred  when you were putting the wires in the last terminals. I can Understand  there being one channel not working for fault with a component but 3  channels down is something that we have only seen when something brushes  or bridges across the terminals which could have been at the time you  installed the wires in the 3 channels or even when you did your initial  install and it has only been discovered now. When moving the wires  around power needs to be disconnected from the unit and the channels  discharged so there is no charge left in the Caps. I'm not say these  causing were intentional but understand they would have been accidental  if this is indeed the cause for these channels not to be working. I can  not classify this as a warranty issue but talk with Hattons. At this point I do not think there is any way of restoring the unit unless we see it first hand.
RegardsRand Cooley
DCCconcepts"

After wiring up those 5 (7 points) I'm reluctant to strip it all down, so in the light of this email I may well just get a 4 point decoder to finish the electrics off.

Any comments welcome…

Cheers
Ron

Just looked at the thread on 'the other' forum Ron.

Bit odd that three people appear to have the same problem and you all managed to accidentally short out three channels during installation.

My view is send it back, or at least contact the retailer.

A bit of gratuitous (and too late), advice Ron.

Never contact the manufacturer or the shop and give them more information, other than "It doesn't work".

The best way to deal with it is to play dumb (easy for me), and just say "It doesn't work."

"I just took it out of the box and plugged it in - and it doesn't work."

FYI, I have heard of these having multiple dead channels right out of the box.

Leave it a couple of weeks and take it back, after having practiced a dumb expression in front of a mirror.

On a good note, a big thanks to Jeremy at Digitrains!
He rang me this morning to say my Bachmann Class 08 Zimo was repaired and ready to pick up from the shop at no cost! The decoder had blown and caused a short circuit, he has replaced all the components and checked it runs OK!
A big thank you to him and Digitrains for excellent service!!:pathead

Still thinking about the DCConcepts decoder, if I return it the layout is unusable and I would sooner buy another 4 way decoder to finish the layout.

Cheers
Ron

She's back!! All fixed up and as good as new! Thanks Digitrains!

Also ordered a Bachmann 4MT from Hatton's as it seems the most used loco on the NNR!

Thank you kind Sir. She is a very smooth runner by the looks of things and it's nice to see a good rake of weathered wagons. I'm sure I have an 08 that has been chipped somewhere. I'll need to look it out and get it into my " programming schedule " ;-)

I will reciprocate the videos Ron …… At some point but for now I'm trying to get my points sorted out. It will make any video so much more worthwhile if I can show something on a good run …….. Maybe even with a rake if wagons . Oooooooo:mutley

Thanks for the video.

Cheers

Fiddle yard will now be called 'Sheringham Yard' in keeping with the local area and the job it does. I have painted all the track and the coach shed, applied some static grass and bushes at one end so far! It's now 'beer time' while everything dries and is ready to hoover, photo's to follow!

Hi Ron,

Fantastic. The first shot of the sidings is terrific. You have this scenic malarkey off to a T.

These loco's are sitting there like greyhounds ready to spring from a trap.:mutley

A great result.

Thanks all, well I've just spent the last hour chipping a Bachmann 4MT and it has been the hardest of any loco I have ever done!
After finally parting the boiler and the mainframe/motor I then had to remove the weight in the boiler to get the weight out and the encoder in and finally found if I removed the smoke box door I could just manage to get the Digitrax encoder in (but not the stay-alive!). Good job the smoke box door was just a press fit!! But it's back together again, programmed and running well, what a job!! managed to lose the whistle off the boiler top and cannot find it any where!!

Cheers
Ron

I used N gauge DN136D decoders in everything I've hard wired Ron, purely due to available space.

Never even considered stay-alive.

Bet the whistle will turn up when your not looking for it.

Here's the new loco, a Bachmann 4MT. It has not been altered apart from the decoder addition. (See previous post!)
