I was about to say something frivolous about your tulip field Chris but then saw your dedication.  So sorry to hear about your sister-in-law.

Covid 19 is carrying people off in their thousands but we're pretty confident we'll conquer it within a few months.  Cancer will still be there, quietly and steadily nibbling away at life.  No dramatic lock-down headlines - just taking those we love and touching most families sooner or later. It's an insidious disease.

I meant to ask before Chris - what's the rock face made from in this shot ?  It looks really good.

Indeed it does…
The rock face is plaster of Paris in a Woodlands mould and then painted/weathered. There is more information in the archive if you want to go back!

Super tulip field - the re-coloured ones works really well.  I love the path too, very realistic next to your wall, it's a lovely walk for Farmer Jack.  Nice Blue engine too!

Thanks. The path in part is made using left over ash from a BBQ! I was just about to tip it and decided it was a good colour and size for paths/county roads, so I kept some!

Inspired.  Seeing a modelling opportunity in everything!

Wood ash? Nasty material. Very alkaline and a respiratory irritant. Briquettes? Same.

Thanks for the heads up. It’s from Briquettes.  It’s a very small amount contained in a Tupperware container. Applied by pinching and sprinkling a little in place onto some watered down glue. 

Hopefully that isn’t too bad…

When you can’t go to the beach, start making your own!

Disaster with one week to go on the A4 project though!…

Don't use on a painted surface it said, why not I thought… This is why….






It seems as the water waves has dried, it has contracted and pulled away from the floor flattening the waves as well as splitting.






 



Sooooo, I've used the toenail scissors and made small incisions to allow the water to sit on the floor below it.  I used super glue to stick it back down, although in some areas this has coloured the water slightly, but i'm hoping this can be hidden with some new white water.  Once the superglue had dried, I've filled the gaps with some more Woodland Scenics water waves and as said tonight will add some new white water…






As per the remit of spending as little money on this as I can, the housing at the back is a broken apart Hornby bungalow, which was rescued from the bin after a clear up. I've added some wires to represent pipework, as well as painting and weathering the tracks. You can clearly see the yellowish tinge to the water in the photo above…

Oh Chris - not a time to have a disaster, with just a week to go.    I had woodland scenics water effect that said not to be used with PVA, and I thought "Why not?" and had equally horrible results.

However, I think you have pulled off a great recovery and a credit to your modelling nouse.  

I had to look a few times for the yellowish tinge to the water, and then realised that what I thought was your colouring to make it look like dirty water was actually your problem.  I'm sure you will be able to fix it.

One of my favourite philosophers wrote: "People think that patience is doing quick things slowly.  But real patience is doing things wrong and then putting them right"  If it's any consolation, I've had a nightmare modelling day, where nothing has gone right!

Thanks Michael. It isn't always plan sailing.  I see this as a prototype for Teasel Bay's stormy diorama which I plan to sit on top of the "holiday destination" beach.  Maybe it could be the winter theme!

I'll add some photos of last night's progress later. Now the white water is back on top its pretty difficult to pick out any issues. Phew! I was pretty close to saying sod it another other choice words tbh!

Hello Chris. I must say, in spite of the splitting problem, the overall effect is pretty amazing. Looking back at the photo of Dawlish Warren which you posted, I was surprised to see that there was a lot of brown water in the shot.  Personally, I wouldn't be too worried about any discolouration on the model.

Hey, thanks for the positive words.  

I was also surprised with how much sedation "brown" is in the water as well. Even while painting the base of the water the same colour of the land it felt very wrong, but I suppose it makes sense given the amount of soil it has eaten and being churned around. The majority of the waters colour comes from the foam on top. With a couple layers of white I've hopefully matched that.

So I've finally finished my A4 boxfile challenge. Here are the photos I'm entering for the competition on Friday.

That is superb, Chris - and all in a boxfile.  I think you have proven that everyone has room for something model railway related.  I might be tempted to have a go myself, if I can find a suitable scene.  I think it was a stroke of genius, the topic you chose and the water looks outstanding,not only realistic but it has also captured everything about the original photograph. You have just the right amount of dirty water, and the colour is spot on. The road and worn road markings are excellent too.  Good luck with the competition - it would definitely get my vote.
