Branch Line - Roundy, roundy with some shunting

Talcum powder doesn't work for me.

Tried it in some poster paint and tried sprinkling some on PVA, but I don't get any sort of discernible textured finish. (Smells nice though).

Just waiting for glue to dry on a mixture of fine ballast and tarmac scatter, with card set against the sleepers to build up the ground around the track.

Haven't tried the air-drying clay yet.

Decided to go with a mix of fine dark brown ballast and tarcmac scatter to give a dirt look.

I tested raising the ground level next to the track with 2mm on the left and 1mm card on the right.

2mm is a bit too high and gives a dip between the edge of the card and the sleepers, but 1mm is about right with the tops of the sleepers just showing along some of the length.

Spread some around to get an idea of what it would look like and although it looks lighter than the ballast on the head shunt in the pictures, it looks darker to the naked eye.

The only problem with this is, it takes a long time as I have to keep waiting for the glue to dry (normally overnight)  before doing the next bit.

I decided that the air-drying clay would probably give too smooth a finish if I could get it right, which may be fine for a well used very busy goods yard, but from pictures I've looked at for the sort of line I want to model the ground cover appears to be more granular.

Anyway, don't suppose it'll look too bad when I've finished.

G`day Ed,

That`s looking good.
Once you add in more scenic bits and pieces it will seem like it was always there…thumbs

Hi Ed,

You must be feeling very encouraged with this as you can really see it coming together. That's what I like about the scenics as you can have it all in your minds eye but once you actually start doing it, you breath life into the layout.

I felt great with the Highbridge results when I started ( before undoing it all again ) and it's why I am desperate to get over the magnet stage to allow me to crack on again as it will all start to ramp up progress wise.
I'm fortunate as there is yourself, G0ibi and others at the same stage and blazing the trail.:mutley

I get to steal all the idea's once you guys have paved the way. :mutley

Keep up the good work Sir.

Thanks Gormo.

Don't expect to get anywhere near the level of detailed scenery on the layouts on here, but as long as it looks reasonable to me I'll be happy enough.

(Besides, I can always go back and do bits again if I want to.)

Don't think you'll steal many ideas from me Toto, I've already stolen them from somebody else :mutley

Couple of patches filled and two more bits of card now glued down between the tracks ……………………………

…… now waiting for the glue to dry

You've maybe stolen them from somebody else but now I can find them very easily. Not just that but as you go through a thread where you actually follow someone else doing it, it much more understandable rather then just reading  it off a thread which you know nothing about.

You keep stealing away. I'll get you a new over coat with extra deep pockets for your Xmas. We'll start to call you fagen. ( Oliver Twist fame ).

Cheers Ed.

I agree with Pete, Ed. Take your time and enjoy it as you go. It is all coming together and looking good. Scenics is the bit I enjoy doing, it is probably the most relaxing part of building a model railway.  :thumbs

Cheers, Gary.

yes, is it the journey along the tracks, the enjoyable part or getting to the buffers at the terminal station?

To me, the journey is more interesting than the final arrival  ( if there is ever a "final" arrival ??)

Thanks chaps.

I think it's the frustratingly long time the glue takes to dry that's really annoying and the autumnal weather doesn't help.

Mind you, we seem to have gone straight from spring to autumn this year, so even if I'd got to this stage a bit earlier I'd don't suppose the glue would have dried much quicker.

Your right about enjoying the journey though, as I don't expect to ever get anywhere near reaching the buffers.

Just catched up on your layout, making some good progress on the layout, had a chuckle when I saw it was my fault you bought a Hornby Class 31, I look forward to seeing your progress on that project, I admit I sold my one when I made my brief dabble in N gauge, which I now regret so I may have to repeat my project again as I was impressed with the end result.

Kind Regards

Your totally forgiven Aaron and one day I might get around to painting it green and attempt some detailing as you did on yours.

Only problem is, the blue is beginning to grow on me which is a bit worrying :mutley

Good luck with your ballasting Owen, I'm only intending to do this goods yard and then finish off the station area for now, then it's on to other things.
