Some more great work there Marty and the 'window frame' tutorial was much appreciated.

As you know, card is my preferred medium but I must have a go at a Plasticard building at some time. I also use etched brass windows which, while they are much easier to use, do necessitate the addition of another layer of thin card between the inner and outer layer to form a recess for the etched brass frames.

Trevor

That last shot showing where it will sit is a cracker Marty. :thumbs

Not only does it show the excellent rendered wall but also shows off the "cluttered" look of the ensemble with the different roof lines etc.  A most interesting little corner. :thumbs:thumbs

Hi Marty,

That is a great render job. The surface has come up very nicely, well done ! :thumbs

Can I ask what 'gesso' is ??

Cheers, Gary.

Thanks Trevor,

I really should try brass etched frames one day. Just a matter of organising myself.

Cheers

Gary,

Gesso is an artist's base preparation material, the acrylic version I have is  a combination of calcium carbonate with an acrylic polymer medium latex. Basically a thicker base coat that can be mixed with acrylic colours. Very useful in providing texture or elevation on a painting.

Mill house Cont.,

…. And done… Well mostly….

Painted with acrylics, doors, barge boards, lean to brickwork.

Tiles are printed paper cut into 2mm wide strips and applied from the roof edge up with a 1mm overlap on each row.

Waste pipe on the rear wall is fine copper wire, soldered at the joins and painted.

Just the chimney to do.

Superb Marty. :doublethumb

Love the render - particularly the "stains" on the gable wall. :thumbs  Not sure if that's intentional but it really looks like rain has run down there.

You must surely be very pleased with that yourself. :cheers

Tremendous Marty and those roof tiles must have taken a while to do!    The down pipe is also excellent and I'm trying to remember how you make the gutters?

After a marathon read I have finally completed studying your efforts!
I must admit that never having made a tree and intending to buy 2-300 Pine trees that I admire your efforts, I haven't got the patience for such things besides I think I might need an eye transplant after concentrating on modelling Pine needles!
I must also admit to a certain amount of that dangerous stuff called envy!  Seeing the dimensions and reading your ideas and plans makes my brain wither!
Nevertheless it has been an interesting 2 hours but now I need to lie down and decompose!
Regards, Peter (Another "N"thusiast!)

Each can do but little, BUT if each did that little all would be done!

Thanks Ken,

An evening to do the roof tiles, maybe 3 hours?

The gutters are simply angle styrene strip glued under the eaves with the lip up. In N Scale, IMHO nothing more is needed.

Downpipes are styrene rod, bent to shape with needle nose pliers, painted and once dry the paint removed from the parts that need to be glued. One drop under the gutter and one on the wall near the base.

Peter,
A marathon effort indeed, surprised you managed it in only a few hours!!
I go back to the beginning every now and then to remind myself of how far I have come and reinforce that I am actually getting somewhere.

I've found with some of my trees that I didn't make the bark goop thick enough around the trunk, something I suspected all along and now these trees have got a bad case of trunk droop!

There will have to be some remedial work done to them before they are planted.

The size of the layout IS a little daunting, especially as I'm a
solo modeller but I'm hoping there is enough time to get it substantially finished… And even if there isn't I'm enjoying the journey and running trains. :thumbs

I would really love a basement empire a la our American cousins… But that would require a basement to start with.

Keep up the good work on your layout, I'm enjoying the story and look forward to your next step toward "Nowhere".

Cheers

37 Class

The imposing bulk and latent power of the 37 Class has always been a draw card and up until recently absent from the NE motive power fleet.

37254 is seen here at Henllan station…

And here on the bank with the first of a set of new Mk 1s to go with it.

While passenger services had ceased before this beastie came on line they were used in the last couple of years on the branch for freight duties.

…and with a growing fleet of diesels it might be time to rewrite history…

At heart, I'm a steam man but unfortunately, there's no denying the fact that, in model form, as in real life, diesels outperform steamers by miles.  That's why I settled on the transition period ……….:roll:

She looks good Marty - except for the livery.  Green blends in so much better with the countryside although Kernow would probably offer you an extra discount as one of his "chosen few" ……….:thumbs:thumbs

Thinking that I could crack on with ground goop and scatter and banish the snow after finishing the Mill Building was pure fantasy!
From the photo below it's obvious that some sort of access is required up and down the hill. Nothing much exists now of what once was and the bank on the layout is considerably steeper than that on the prototype…

Scratch built stairs and wooden walkways were the only option. Here they are under construction with the Colonel overseeing the design…

Finally the snow has been replaced by mud… glorious mud…. one of my favorite parts of the hobby, although getting it in between the buildings, retaining walls and flights of stairs was tricky, in some cases dribbled from the edge of a spatula! Although the floor was protected with layers of newspaper the layout was not, trusting the steadiness of my hand not to splash mud about the place. Silly, silly boy. Always protect the work that has gone before. Luckily the splashes were minor and only a little remedial work is required to repair the damage. Rampant vegetation will probably hide most of it.
The mill weir is now in place and all the buildings, walls and stairs bedded into the landscape, it'll be fun if they are ever needed OUT of the landscape!

The river bed is now ready for painting and detailing along the banks. The two pack furniture resin found in DYI stores will form the river itself, the plan is to tint the resin with acrylics a muddy green/brown as the river here is deep and flowing strongly after the winter thaw and spring rains.

But the resin will have to wait until the grass has grown… which might be next.
cheers
Marty

Whilst I don't envy you the work involved and it makes me wheeze just thinking about it, I cannot look at the buildings without thinking "I pity the removal men when it comes to the grand piano!"
Things are shaping up nicely, I for one am looking forward to your watery efforts.  I too have a small section that will eventually be wet, if not from my tears of frustration!
Regards, Peter.

:mutleyThanks Peter,

There was, from what I've seen, wagon access to the top level of the mill from the rear of the Mill House (not modeled due to lack of space). Of course it was all shanks mare to get the finished product from the Mill, the flannel shirts were bundled up in brown paper and walked to Pentrecourt Halt across the bridge by sack trolley. A nice job on a fine summer day… but then this is Wales and you don't get many of them!!!?

There are a few discourses on creating water effects in the index, including http://yourmodelrailway.net/view_topic.php?id=3870&forum_id=59&page=1 which documents the experiments I did with PVA, varnish and resin.

The resin wins hands down in my opinion but I've seen fantastic results with both PVA (Chris Nevard) and varnish (MikeC).

cheers
