We always forgot that with Marty's "Pentrecourt Halt" Phil.  It's stunning modelling in any scale but in "N" it's fantastic. :thumbs:thumbs

Pretty neat Marty! I will offer some advice though. Next time try to use small wires and not battery cables. Those wires look huge!  :lol:

Just kidding of course. Did you solder them to the board or did they come that way?

1mm and 1.5mm cable I think, what I use to connect my droppers, I've got reels of the stuff so it was handy. Next time I'll use some of the twisted pair I've salvaged from some Cat 5 cable.
And yes, I soldered them to the board, I've done it the other way, just soldering the wire to the anode/cathode on the LED/resistor but this way is neater and easier to position, albeit longer to construct. 
We'll see, I'll probably change my mind and do it another way next time.

Marty i have just caught up on this thread and as always i just love the work you do, especially knowing its N gauge. After having seen your work first hand as some on here did as well at the YMR meet a few years ago, i know what great lenghs you go to with your work.

I like the water line on the mill, a good eample of what kind of eye and the way you think. Alot of people would not of thought of that.

Again i always look forward to your work on this layout. Any chance of a long shot picture just to see how big this n gauge layout is :thumbs

Also tell her you wiil  treat you to lunch my lovely :thumbs and when she falls for it the next miove is when she is ready to go. You tell her how lovely she looks and along th walk you let her know how lucky you are to have her as your wife etc etc. Dont overdo it thou she smell a rat. Oh and go a different way to the place, somewhere she dont often go to get there.

The 2nd Mill Building
In the end we didn't go to the Perth model railway show. Because we are a one show town it's not really worth going every year, in fact, every 3rd or 4th year is better, things change and Tracy doesn't get bored. "It's not worth going because there is little there as good as yours" she says…. what?! :shock: I must be doing something right.
So…. in an effort to get a move on… this is a record of how (and why) the second mill building was constructed.
This building still exists and looks like this, or it did in 2010. You can see the line of the weir too.






The riverside wall below is substantially complete, window framing built up from individually applied lengths of 0.4mm x 0.5mm strip. Painstaking but oddly therapeutic.






The layered 3mm balsa, 1mm plasticard and 0.5mm relief plasticard method was tried again. The glazing is a section of an old shirt box lid, suitably scored and cut to size. By this time all the windows had been cut in the plasticard, both external shell and 1mm interior and doing another set in the balsa just wasn't on. Black paint behind the windows might do instead because interior lighting wasn't going to be needed really, was it?









The 0.5mm external shell and the 1mm interior plasticard were laminated together and here show where the glazing will be installed.





And with the balsa now glued to the interior wall, trapping the glazing in place, the blackened windows seem to work OK, don't they? You can see I wasn't convinced, although where it was to live in it's little valley on the layout, unless the building was going to be lit from the interior, it would be fine.






The end wall directly facing the edge of the layout was next, the door will have a raised walkway connecting it to the steep hillside in the valley. Same process, balsa, 1mm interior and 0.5mm shell.







The front wall complete and the components of the rear wall, which faces the back scene in production…







Oooer…. what if interior lighting is needed…. hmmmm…. a couple more windows cut into the balsa aren't going to hurt are they? Go on…. be a devil….






… and look, you can see right through…. well… mostly… and it is N scale…. and it is the back wall that no-one will see in the end…










Let's glue them up and see how they fit…. somewhere about here…. and although the hillside is going to need some modification to get the wall sitting on the riverbed I do believe we are getting somewhere.
(and Wayne, I really failed on chamfering the near corner didn't I??? )







 Now… where did I put my craft knife….

I'm glad that its you that is modelling in N gauge and not me, as I'm fantastic at making a dogs breakfast of all things small, that's why I gladly choose OO… :lol:  I noticed that you chose to put windows right across the face of the building and exclude the end doors on each level. Would it have been easier to put doors in, rather than more windows ?

Things are coming along nicely with the building. N gauge too, I take my hat off to you Marty. 

It's when your thumb is also in the picture it's possible to see how small the modeling really is.

Great work Marty. That's going to be a lovely building. As an N Gauger myself I can imaging the work that went into all those windows. They all look very regular so did you use a jig ?

That is superb in every respect Marty and the picture of it in situ really does show it to it's best advantage - and I've always thought that scoring a celluloid box lid is the best way of depicting glazing bars in N.    (As a matter of interest Tesco in the UK sell their CD plastic wallets in pre-scored 2mm diagonal lined celluloid boxes which are ideal for small N gauge glazing bars - the boxes are sized 160mm x 130mm)
