Thanks for the kind words and encouragement gents,
It’s motivated me to do some modelling.

Previously I believe progress had stalled here.

Partly because of work and life commitments but also as the way forward in this corner of the layout was unclear to me. The turntable in its basic “push it around with a finger “ form, had dropped into its removable base board nicely. The turntable base board was stable and didn’t wobble on its risers connected to the joists below and the track joining Henllan to Newcastle Emlyn had been powered and tested.

I was in two minds, should I crack on with the station track laying or scenic this corner? In the end I chose a combination of both. Lay the engine shed track and scenic the corner because both tasks were intertwined.

…and there all progress halted. Trains still ran regularly on the existing part of the layout and maintenance is ongoing as always. There are a couple of early track joins across base boards that shift with the change in humidity from winter to summer that are going to have to eventually be relaid.

To help envisage what and where a bit of red card has been hacked out to fit into the corner and the location of the stream and it’s bridging engine shed boldly sketched in with a black permanent marker. A bit a spare track masquerades as the engine shed line.

To help even further a mock up of the engine shed is needed. More card, a pencil and a ruler…

By typing Newcastle Emlyn engine shed into google you should see both a photo of the shed from about 1950 and also a beautifully done 00 model of the same should you desire to do so. Both were used to sketch out the above. The NE article in the GWR journal that is such an invaluable reference for the branch reports a footprint of about 48’ x 15’. The length looked right but the 15’ width was way too narrow. The standard gauge between openings on either side of the track is 14’. A SWAG (scientific wild a&$3d guess) was made and 23’ was the width used for the mock up.

The prototype was constructed out of corrugated Iron and it must have been bitterly cold in winter if the engine wasn’t in steam.

Once cut out a tube of Elmer’s glue was dug out of the glue storage box in the workshop. Totally didn’t work. Took ages to dry and for some reason wouldn’t really set. CA to the rescue, hold the pieces together, trickle along the edge with super glue allowing capillary action to suck the glue into the join, hold your breath and count to ten, move onto the next join.

Despite being a reasonable bit of card the structure was still a bit floppy and lengths of appropriately sized balsa has been used to brace and square on the inside of the model.

The tube of Elmer’s glue came in useful when rolling the roof arc.

Plonked in position the next stage can now commence… finding a method of fixing a new joist and riser to support the engine shed board, right in the back corner too. Mutter… but I have a plan.

The good thing about these drawing contracts currently eating into available modelling time is that the drafting computer is in the layout room… and every now and then it is good to stand up, stretch and do something else for a little while.

Not the sort of motive power that the shed was originally designed for but even a GWR 2-8-0 heavy goods loco fits!

Just…!

Mojo engaged…

Great to see the Mojo back Marty. The mock up shed was well worth doing im sure the new bit of baseboard will soon be in place and that section will be well on the way.

Good to see you modelling again.  Your card prototype is better than my real card modelling!!

I've been doing some catching up after a long lay-off Marty - I think about 10 pages of it !!!

I know what you mean about "things" getting in the way of the important bits of life  - railway modelling.  I'm months behind with my train shed - SWMBO has managed to squeeze all her "things that must be done" demands in first.  I have no idea how they manage it but that's apparently, the way it works.

You're making an excellent job of the turntable but then we've come to expect that from you and the video was great - a very "Hitchcock" type opening scene with the door ……………….

As others said, your card mock-up of the engine shed is better quality than my "finished articles" …………..

Looking forward to more progress around the shed area - it will look brilliant snuggled into the hilly scenery.

Thank you for the kind words Brian, Michael, Ken and Peter!
I know what you mean Peter, SWMBO's list always seems to climb in priority… and then there's work (which I'm meant to be doing this Australia Day long weekend in Perth, so this will be a quick but not only post).

Once again, thanks for the comment about the mock up but you gentlemen do yourselves a disservice, I've seen your modelling and my fast and furiously slapped together mock up pales beside your efforts.

Many thanks go to John Dew too… he has kindly provided Carmarthen Shed's loco allocation for 1947 and I am going to drop it into my layout topic here for future reference.

Oooh, look… a fleet of Panniers!! and Collett goods….

Let me see… the 0-4-2T 1472 was allocated to the branch in 1925 to run the passenger workings up and down the branch, she was replaced by 5819 (Renumbered from 1419) in 1934 which was the branch engine for 18 years until the end of passenger services and is the affectionately remembered loco that started me down this branch line route all those years ago… "A rose of an engine" according to the fireman Islwyn John.

Here's the modelled representative of 1472 at Pentrecourt Halt.

Back to work son… this doesn't pay the bills

Hi Marty

The great thing about this forum is that I am not really a fan of GWR and find N gauge way too fiddly.  However, your video and that pic of Pentrecourt Halt are great and very inspiring.

During holiday times when we all have so much to do that excludes partaking in our hobby, such stuff is a great kick-up-the-pants to get back in the shed and get something done!!

Ooops….

While collecting empty cattle stock for Saturday's cattle market at Newcastle Emlyn, Driver Jones was momentarily distracted by the sight of Miss Davies dismounting from her bicycle in the station car park. The loco has stayed on the rails and guard Griffiths stepped nimbly onto the platform when he saw the engine coming and was unharmed.

Replacement buses have been arranged.

I've got to ask Marty, was that a staged "crash" or the real thing?  Part of me hopes the former, but the novice train driver that is me secretly hopes for the latter, if only to spare my own blushes! (I was sure I had changed that point…. what do you mean the little man in the loco can't stop the engine by himself?  Must I do everything?  That sort of thing!)

Carmarthen shed doesn’t have a breakdown train Ed. ……. or at least so I’m told by the financial controller when I asked her!!! I even mentioned that Ed suggested I needed one.

…..reckon it would have to be a scratch build too. Maybe a dabble in 3D printing…. onto the back burner for future fun.

Brian, in a late 1930’s West Wales village I suspect THAT would have shocked more than just  Driver Jones.
“Mr” Davies could have been on holiday from Scotland I suppose…. riding his bicycle in a kilt. Hehehe

I don’t think I could have staged that one Michael, it was so natural and dramatic I just had to post a photo of it.

No, all me I’m afraid. My drafting computer shares my modelling desk, which is awfully convenient for running trains on the roundy-roundy part of the layout while I work…. just to keep the track clean you understand?

There was a random de-coupling incident at the station cross over while I was concentrating on a particularly difficult bit of pipe work. The train of wagons and brake van rolled quietly to a stop and the loco carried merrily on its way around the loop until it met up again.

I’ll say this for these Union Mills locos, being metal bodied they don’t stand for any nonsense, out of my way you lot! First I knew about it was hearing the clatter of derailing stock over my left shoulder.

Oh dear!  But being an eternal optimist, at least it gave you a great photo opportunity and at least no one was injured, other than Driver Jones' pride!  I hope no damage done..

Hi Marty

Two things . . . if it was a rake of cattle wagons, why did they need buses?

Secondly - and more importantly, is there any chance of a shot of Miss Davies, please?

She must be really something to cause so much havoc!

I just KNEW someone was going to ask for a photo!  :mutley

It might take a while Max but I've now got a Miss Davies and her bicycle to add to the layout.
