N Gauge - Newcastle Emlyn****

I can't remember how you went about removing the screws.
Do you ballast up to the screw and then when it's dry remove the screw and fill in where the screw was?

Yes, that's right. Works OK as long as you don't have a bridge hiding the screw from sight.
Got to go back and get that one out, thought I'd finished ballasting there. At least it's not directly under the bridge.

Looks terrific Shaun, many thanks for the link.
I've watched about 5 mins of the video and it includes a run down the Newcastle Emlyn Branch!!!
Heading home to watch it in full.

Nice to know someone recognises the subtle landscaping deliberately built into the layout…  Ahem… Yes… Well…. You know what I mean…
For comparison I'll demonstrate that it's a bit tricky to get AT the ballast under this bridge…
Especially as I'm all thumbs…!
:cool wink

Incidentally, when you fix the bushes etc (as shown in the left of the last picture) do you just glue the clumps down at the base or do you dribble the usual PVA/water mix all over the clumps to stop them breaking up if accidentally touched or whatever?

Very well done to you and all the other N gauge modellers that produce such realistic looking scenes in such a small scale :thumbs:thumbs:thumbs

I know the feeling Marty!

Hello Ken,
I haven't seen any of your excellent N gauge layout for a while? Have I missed it or are you too just ticking along like me?
As to the bushes… It depends! If I'm happy with the appearance of the foliage on the bush as it is, (rarely), I'll just plant it in a dob of neat PVA and leave it at that.
If I add further scatter in additional colours, which is normal, over the bush then I'll either spray or drop a water/PVA mix over each layer or if the bush, or tree, is completed in the workshop I'll spray with cheap super hold hairspray.
I think I go with the rational that whatever I do there is going to be dust, disturbed flock and fading over time and that the layout will need a light vacuum every now and then.
Like Rick's outdoor Cornwall layout I also expect to have to renew the top layer of flock every now and then to keep the layout looking fresh.
Cheers

That last picture just shows how frighteningly small N gauge really is

Thanks Ed.
Perversely, I enjoy the challenge of trying to get the smaller scale to look as good as the senior scales!
… If I cut my thumbnail what am I going to use to spread the ballast?!!!

I haven't posted on here for quite a while (but have on Max's MRC) and have done quite a lot recently particularly my main Coombe Hinton station area which I've almost finished! I will post on this very shortly on both forums.

Certainly a nice view :thumbs
Wot 'ee sed!
..and as has been said above, until the 'fum appears there is little to even suggest it's 'N' gauge. OO9 track is certainly teaching me how difficult it must be to do 'N', at least the infrastructure stays at OO size, thank goodness.

Have been running trains, with a couple of huge disappointments which I'll write about later, and a nice birthday surprise in May.
T has come to recognise that practically nothing will make me happier than a gifting me a bit of "needed" railway kit on my birthday. She doesn't beat around the bush anymore…"what would you like (that I can afford)".
In this case my first Union Mills loco, a Dean Goods in GWR green, what a cracker of a little engine, solid as, great performer straight from the box. Here she is leading a train of empty cattle wagons down the valley to Newcastle Emlyn for Saturday's market.
Shaft of winter sunlight managed to filter down the hall one afternoon when the front door was open and I couldn't resist catching the light as it reached into the layout room.
Cheers
